Cookies are usually stored by default by a computer's internet browser. They contain settings and information about the web pages accessed. Cookies can often be used to track users and create personalized advertisements. For privacy reasons, many users choose to disable them. This article will teach you how to block the use of cookies on different internet browsers.
Steps
Method 1 of 7: Chrome (Computer)
Step 1. Click the Chrome ⋮ menu button
It has the three dot icon located in the upper right corner of the window.
Step 2. Click on Settings near the bottom of the Chrome menu
Step 3. Click View Advanced Settings or Advanced
This option is located near the end of the "Settings" menu. Doing so will expand the "Settings" menu.
Step 4. Click Site Settings or Content Settings in the "Privacy & Security" section
Step 5. Click on Cookies and Website Data at the top of the "Site Settings" menu
Step 6. Click on the key
next to "Allow sites to save and read cookie data" at the top of the "Cookies and site data" menu.
For older versions, select "Prevent sites from storing any data"
Step 7. Click on the key
next to "Block Secondary Cookies" in the "Cookies and Site Data" menu.
You can also block cookies from individual websites. To do so, click on Add beside Block and enter the address of the website whose cookies you want to block. Then click on Add.
Step 8. Click on the key
next to "Clear cookies and website data when exiting Chrome".
This setting deletes cookies whenever the browser is closed. Doing so will erase all existing cookies the next time you close Chrome.
If you don't want to delete cookies when you close your browser, you'll need to disable this setting when you open Google Chrome next time
Step 9. Close Chrome
To do this, click on the "X" in the upper right corner (Windows) or in the upper left corner (Mac).
Method 2 of 7: Safari (iOS)
Step 1. Tap the "Settings" app
Changing the Safari cookie settings can be done in the iOS "Settings" app.
It is not possible to block cookies in Chrome on iOS due to Apple restrictions. If you want to browse the internet without storing cookies, you will need to open Chrome in incognito mode or use Safari
Step 2. Tap Safari next to a blue compass icon in the "Settings" menu
Step 3. Tap on the key
next to "Block All Cookies" in the "Privacy & Security" section.
The key will shift to the right side.
Step 4. Tap Lock All
This option appears in red on the pop-up menu. Now Safari will no longer save cookies from the websites you visit.
Method 3 of 7: Chrome (Android)
Step 1. Tap the Chrome ⋮ menu button in the upper right corner of the window
It is not possible to block cookies in Chrome on iOS due to Apple restrictions. If you want to browse the internet without storing cookies, you will need to open Chrome in incognito mode or use Safari
Step 2. Tap Settings near the top end of the Chrome menu
Step 3. Tap Site Settings
This is the third option under the "Advanced" heading in the "Settings" menu.
Step 4. Tap Cookies next to a cookie icon in the "Site Settings" menu
Step 5. Tap the key
next to "Cookies" at the top of the "Cookies" menu.
You can also block cookies from individual websites. do it by tapping Add site exception, at the bottom of the "Cookies" menu. Then enter the website you want to block under "Site URL" and tap Add, in the lower right corner.
Step 6. Tap the checkbox
next to "Block secondary cookies".
This is the last option available in the "Cookies" menu. Doing so will block the websites' secondary cookies.
Method 4 of 7: Mozilla Firefox
Step 1. Click the Firefox ☰ menu button (three horizontal lines icon)
in the upper right corner of the window.
Step 2. Click Options next to the gear icon in the Firefox window
Step 3. Click Privacy & Security next to the lock icon in the left sidebar menu
Step 4. Click the radio button next to "Custom"
This is the last option under "Enhanced tracking protection".
Step 5. Click on the dropdown menu next to "Cookies"
This is the first option listed in the "Custom" box under "Enhanced tracking protection".
Step 6. Click All Cookies (will cause pages to be affected)
This is the last option in the drop-down menu next to "Cookies" in the "Custom" box.
- Select "Block Secondary Cookies" from the drop-down menu to allow some cookies if you prefer.
- You can also block individual websites. To do so, click on manage permissions under "Cookies and website data". Enter the address of the website you want to block in the "Website address" bar and click on Block.
Step 7. Click the checkbox next to "Clear cookies and website data when Firefox shuts down"
Now, whenever Firefox is closed, all existing cookies will be closed.
Step 8. Close Firefox
To do this, click on the "X" in the upper right corner (Windows) or in the upper left corner (Mac).
Method 5 of 7: Microsoft Edge
Step 1. Click or tap the … button in the upper corner of the window
Then a popup menu will open on the right side.
Step 2. Click or tap Settings
at the end of the menu, next to the gear icon.
Step 3. Click or tap Privacy & Security next to the lock icon on the left sidebar on the Microsoft Edge menu
Step 4. Click on the drop-down menu under "Cookies" in the middle of the Privacy & Security menu
Step 5. Click Block All Cookies
This is the last option in the "Cookies" drop-down menu.
You can also select "Block secondary cookies" to block some cookies
Method 6 of 7: Safari (computer)
Step 1. Click on the Safari menu
It can be found in the upper left corner of the menu bar screen. This option appears when the window is open and active.
Step 2. Click Preferences
This is the third option available in the "Safari" menu.
Step 3. Click on the Privacy tab
She has a blue icon with one hand.
Step 4. Click the checkbox next to "Block all cookies"
This is the second option available in the "Privacy" menu. Now Safari will no longer save cookies from the websites you visit.
Method 7 of 7: Internet Explorer
Step 1. Click on the Tools menu or on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the web browser
If you don't see these options, press the Alt key
Step 2. Click on Internet Options near the top end of the "Tools" menu
Step 3. Click on the Privacy tab
This is the third tab at the top of the "Internet Options" window.
Step 4. Click on the Advanced button in the lower right corner of the "Settings" option
Step 5. Click Block for the "Primary Cookies" and "Secondary Cookies" options
There are three options under "Primary Cookies" and "Secondary Cookies". Click "Block" below both to block everything.
Step 6. Click the Always allow session cookies checkbox at the end of the "Cookies" menu
Step 7. Click OK to save your settings
This option is located in the lower right corner of the menu. Internet Explorer will now no longer save cookies.
Tips
- Completely disabling cookies prevents you from remaining with your account open on frequently visited websites.
- If you don't want cookies to be saved only in the current browsing session, go to your browser's anonymous or private mode. In this mode, cookies are not saved.
