This article shows you how to reset the modem without unplugging it. Resetting a router over the network is quite simple, but it's not always possible to do the same with a modem, especially if you don't have a device that combines modem and router functions. If the company that provides the internet service has installed a router in your home, you can request a remote reset.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Restarting a Hybrid Modem
Step 1. Make sure you have a hybrid modem
This type of device combines the functions of a router and a modem, which means that there is only one device connected to the line. If you have a hybrid modem, you can reset it over the network.
If the modem provided by the internet service company does not have the router function, skip to the next section
Step 2. Make sure you are connected to the modem's network
To perform the reset operation remotely, your computer must be connected to the modem's network.
Step 3. Find out the router's IP address
You can perform the procedure on Windows and Mac.
Step 4. Open a browser
You have to access the modem's configuration page over the network.
Step 5. Enter the IP address
In the address bar, enter the router's IP address (usually something like 192.168.0.1) and press ↵ Enter to open the configuration page.
Step 6. Enter the router page
Enter username and password if prompted.
If you haven't changed your name and password, it's likely that the information is in the manual or on an adhesive tape stuck to the device
Step 7. Look for the Restart (or Restart if it is in English) option
Each modem has a different configuration page, so you may need to keep looking for the location of each thing. Check the restart function in any of the following tabs:
- Advanced (or Advanced).
- settings (or Settings).
- Settings (or Configuration).
- Help (or Help).
- Utilities (or Utilities).
Step 8. Click Restart
The button name varies by router model and language. When you click, the device should restart.
Step 9. Wait for the modem to finish resetting
It shouldn't take more than a few seconds or minutes. When finished, the internet works again.
Method 2 of 2: Resetting a Regular Carrier Modem
Step 1. Check whether the method described applies to your situation
Did you get the modem from an internet service provider? Try calling the company and asking them to reset the device. Not all companies carry out the procedure, but it is the only way to reset a modem when it is not connected to the network and you cannot physically access the device.
It is not possible to use the method if the device belongs to you and has nothing to do with the company
Step 2. See what is the name of the company that provides the internet
If you don't remember it, take a look at an account, credit card statement, or bank statement.
Step 3. Look up the technical support phone number
Open a search engine, such as https://www.google.com/, and type in the name of your service provider followed by the phrase phone tech support.
For example, to find Vivo's number, type vivo technical support phone on Google and press ↵ Enter
Step 4. Call the operator
Enter the number you found.
Step 5. Browse the numerical options given by the auto attendant
You need to choose the option to speak to an attendant. The process varies from company to company, but they all have to offer the possibility to talk to a real person.
Step 6. Provide the information requested by the attendant
It may ask for a document or facility number, full name, and other data.
Each operator works differently and asks for different information. Some even ask for your date of birth to confirm your identity
Step 7. Ask the operator to reset the modem
If possible, he should perform the procedure after asking for the necessary information.
