Alcagoita, mandubi, “arachis hypogaea” - or whatever you want to call it, peanuts are a legume that is sure to be very good when ground and turned into butter. Delicious, versatile and perfect in its simplicity, peanut butter is one of the largest exports in the United States and extremely popular throughout the West. Commonly associated with George Washington Carver for his work in growing and informing the public about its nutritional benefits, peanut butter can be traced back to the Aztecs, who turned peanuts into a paste to eat. Learn how to choose good peanut butter, use it in sandwiches and meals, and how to prepare more elaborate recipes.
Method 1 of 4: Pick a Good Peanut Butter
Step 1. Choose between granulated or smooth
Just as there are people who like Elvis and people who like the Beatles, there are two types of people in the world: smooth peanut butter and peanut butter. The biggest and most important decision about a peanut butter is also the most fun. Do you like crunchy, granulated peanut butter, or smooth and creamy? There is no wrong answer.

While it may seem like a healthier alternative, peanut butters that are advertised as "fat-reduced" often include hydrogenated oils and more sugars, but with the same amount of calories, to make up for the fat loss. Essentially used as a marketing scam, this strategy ignores the fact that the healthy fats in natural peanut butter are more effective as fat sources. Peanut butter's reduced fat replaces "healthy" mono-saturated fats with sugars and refined carbohydrates, which cause spikes in blood sugar. It's not good for you.
Step 4. Consider grinding your own butter
If you're a special peanut butter fan, you can have fun mixing your own batches and perfecting your recipe. Choose nuts that you like the taste, mash in a food processor, and add a small amount of honey, or salt, to taste. When you grind, you may need to add a little oil to help with the process. You can control the consistency and flavor and make the kind of peanut butter you like.
- Peel off the shells before crushing the peanuts at high speed, adding oil if necessary. Use all the peanuts you like: Valencias, Virginias, Spanish peanuts, and runner are all perfect for making peanut butter. Some prefer Spanish peanuts because they have a slightly higher oil content. Raw peanuts can be used to make peanut butter, which will taste a little different than the more popular roasted varieties. Try honey-roasted peanuts for a special taste.

Step 6. Try mixed peanut butters
Why buy jelly separately? You can also get peanut butter with other products already included. Grape jelly? Nutella? Marshmallow cream? It's too good to be true. While these mixes sometimes have a slightly coarser texture than plain peanut butter, if you're a fan of the grainier ones, this can be a fun alternative, especially for kids.

Step 1. Make a classic peanut butter sandwich
Is there a better combination than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? From professional cyclists to lazy bachelors, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can be one of the great equalizers of Western civilization. It's just perfect. Within that perfection, however, there are a lot of varieties and options, making it simple and limitless.
The Classic starts with two slices of white loaf bread. Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on each slice, then a thin layer of grape jelly on one side. Place the other slice of bread with the peanut butter, with the uncoated side facing down, on the other slice with the jam, so that the jam penetrates the bread. Cut in half and enjoy with milk

Start with two slices of whole-grain toast. Spread a thin layer of all-natural, granulated peanut butter on both slices.
