Step 1. The most basic and simplest tool is the bow saw

It is important to clamp the pipe in a vise to prevent it from slipping and you end up cutting yourself. Be very careful and take the necessary precautions.

  • If you like, use some type of clamp to secure the pipe to the workbench. Work with what is currently available.
  • Attach the pipe a few inches from the cut location. If possible, do this on both sides for added security.

Step 2. Mark the cut line on the pipe with a permanent marker

Don't worry about the line. If you're a perfectionist and want to erase it, rub some alcohol and you're done.

Step 3. Position the bow saw on the line and hold the cable securely

Then use your other hand to push the tool down. This will help get you started in the right place.

Step 4. Start sawing, but make sure the saw doesn't come off the line

Don't be too slow or too fast; work fast enough for the cut to happen, which shouldn't take long.

Method 2 of 3: Pipe Cutter

Step 1. This tool has two types:

scissors or ratchet. Scissor style is ideal for smaller pipes, but ratchet is recommended for all diameters. It's much safer and more reliable.

The force required in the hands and arms when using the scissors style cutter is very extreme, so it would be even better to use some kind of saw. Investing in the purchase of a ratchet style cutter would make the process much easier

Step 2. These cutters have a half-moon shaped spot where you must support the pipes and a blade that extends while cutting

Make the cut line and support the pipe in the correct place.

Step 3. Close the tool, like scissors, to cut the material

Use your other hand to hold the pipe. The effort will not be too great.

Step 3. Secure the pipe with a clamp

Then start cutting at low to medium speed. Finally, repeat the process as needed.

Tips

  • It is not recommended to cut PVC with any of the tools below:

    • Table saw: the PVC barrel is round, and the table surface is flat and often smooth; the barrel can slip and cause severe damage to the user.
    • Bandsaw: The blade moves very slowly and unless you are using one with very fine teeth it can damage the barrel as well as being dangerous for the user too.
  • Saws, for example, have teeth that are too far apart and will not cut the PVC correctly.
