New Year is one of the most popular celebrations worldwide. Each place celebrates in a different way, but the most common line is to say goodbye to the year that is ending to welcome what is coming. You can celebrate as a family or with thousands of strangers. In one way or another, may your celebration bring memories to last a lifetime.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Participating in an Official Event
Step 1. Go to an outdoor party
Street parties usually have the participation of singers or DJs and fireworks. To participate in some of these parties it is necessary to purchase a ticket in advance, while others are free.
- Many of these parties are internationally famous: Copacabana Beach, in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); Times Square, in New York (USA); Sydney Bay in Sydney (Australia); Central London, London (England); Eiffel Tower in Paris (France); and Brandenburg Gate in Berlin (Germany).
- Several other cities organize large outdoor parties.
- If your city doesn't have such a party, you can start the tradition! A good way to get started is to advertise through sites like Meetup.
Step 2. Go to a nightclub
If you want to turn the year around dancing a lot, get your friends together and go to a nightclub. Night clubs usually feature the best DJs and make the best drinks.
Step 3. Attend a formal event
Many luxury hotels and restaurants organize gala events. In these places, the attractions are usually on account of orchestras, jazz bands and professional singers or bands. Tickets need to be purchased in advance.
Most of these events require full dress
Step 4. Go to a casino
In addition to playing cards and playing slot machines, casinos often throw large New Year's Eve parties, which include dinner and a show with singers, bands or comedians.
- Casinos are prohibited in Brazil, but in the United States the minimum age to enter one is 21 years.
- In Las Vegas, USA, casinos come together to create a great party.
Step 5. Participate in a religious celebration
Some people participate in religious celebrations at the turn of the year. These parties include food, music and a message from the church leader.
Method 2 of 4: Attending a Party
Step 1. Celebrate at a friend's house
Probably someone you know is having a New Year's party at home. Ask friends and choose the one that best suits your expectations (party size, activities, location, etc).
The party may offer food and drinks, or each guest may have to bring a plate. Get all the information in advance to know what to bring
Step 2. Go out to dinner
Whether it's a family-friendly restaurant to celebrate with the kids or a place to celebrate with friends, going out to dinner is a moderate option to celebrate the new year.
- Some restaurants offer a special menu for the occasion.
- Make reservations in advance. Restaurants are usually full on New Year's Eve.
Step 3. Make a meeting with friends
Get some friends together at one of your favorite places. It can be in a bowling alley, restaurant, club or park. Plan ahead of time what to wear, what to bring, and any other details. It's basically an impromptu party.
Step 4. Go out on a date
What could be more romantic than celebrating new beginnings? Call the person you're dating, make a reservation in advance, and spend the entry of the year together. Enjoy the turn to enjoy the fireworks display with a kiss.
Method 3 of 4: Making Your Own Party
Step 1. Call people into your home
If you don't want to go out to celebrate, invite people to your house. You can decide between calling a few people, for a more intimate celebration, or calling several people and throwing a big New Year's party.
Step 2. Make decorations and props
Festivities are great for putting manual talents into practice. You can create a decoration and some themed accessories. Hats, confetti and horns are great accessories. For more ideas, look online or in craft magazines.
If you want to put your creativity into practice, you can create some themed games
Step 3. Provide the food
You can make a table of cold cuts, snacks and some desserts that are sure to please the guests. If you don't want to prepare any of this, buy some snacks or order pizza (just make sure you order early).
Step 4. Provide drinks
A lot of people drink champagne when the bell rings at midnight, but any drink is fine. If you want to offer some variety, arrange wine, beer and cocktails.
- For parties with children, also provide juices and other non-alcoholic drinks.
- If you don't want the kids to stay up until midnight, celebrate the arrival of the new year earlier by hitching a ride on a celebration from some other country that has the earlier time zone.
Step 5. Ask each person to bring food and drink
If you don't want to take on the responsibility of arranging food and drink, ask guests to bring it. In return, you are offering the venue and organization of the party.
Each person should bring one or two items, be it food or drink - or both. When people start arriving, you should have everything organized to receive them
Step 6. Stay home alone
To avoid crowds, you can stay at home relaxing and watching movies. There are several with a New Year theme, but you don't need to limit yourself to them, obviously.
You can watch the fireworks display on TV or join neighbors at turn-time if you're interested
Method 4 of 4: Honoring Tradition
Step 1. Start a family tradition
Many families create New Year traditions. Since the date represents change, people discuss goals and challenges.
- Some families tend to have a formal dinner, at home or in restaurants, to celebrate.
- Others usually honor some traditions passed down through the ages by their predecessors.
Step 2. Follow a personal tradition
It's never too late to start a personal tradition, whether it's going to a party, staying at home, seeing the fireworks or celebrating the New Year in your own way.
Step 3. Follow a cultural tradition
Depending on their origin, different traditions are celebrated in different ways. You don't need to be from a specific place to follow a custom, just like it and adopt the habit for your celebration.
- In Greece, parents bake a cake and hide a coin inside. At midnight, the cake is cut and everyone eats, whoever takes the piece containing the coin is blessed with good fortune in the coming year.
- In Belgium, children write letters to their parents and read them aloud.
- In Estonia, people eat up to 12 meals to celebrate the New Year. Some meals are left for the spirits who visit homes on the date.
- In Ireland, women put mistletoe under their pillow for good fortune.
- In Germany, people eat pigs made with marzipan and donuts; the combination is believed to bring good luck.
Tips
- Get tickets for clubs, casinos or gala events well in advance as they tend to sell out.
- Do an internet search to check the parties that will happen in your city.
- A traditional New Year's Eve song is the “Auld Lang Syne”, a Scottish song written by poet Robert Burns. "Auld lang syne" means, loosely translated, "for the old days." A Brazilian version, adapted by Braguinha and João de Barro, became known as “Valsa da Despedida”.
Notices
- Drink with moderation.
- Do not stay near fireworks firing locations.
