Figuring out the shape of your eyes is pretty easy if you have a mirror and a few minutes to spare. In addition to the shape of your eyes, you can also pay attention to their position on your face, which greatly influences your overall appearance.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Identifying the format

Step 1. Look at your eyes in the mirror

Go to a well-lit spot with a mirror and place it as close to your face as possible to get a clear view of at least one eye.

  • A magnifying mirror is ideal, but any mirror where you can see your eyes well will work. This includes mirrors hanging on the wall or in cabinets, as well as portable ones.
  • Natural lighting is ideal, but if you can see your eyes well in the mirror, artificial light can work just as well.

Step 2. See if your eyelid has a crease

Look at your upper eyelid. If it doesn't have a crease, you have "single-lidded" eyes. On the other hand, if you do, you'll need to keep reading to figure out the shape of your eyes.

  • The lid fold does not have to be visible to exist. Real "single eyelid" eyes don't have any creases at all.
  • "Mono-eyelid" counts as the base shape, so if that's your case, you don't need to continue reading the steps in the "Shape" section of this article, and you can go to the "Position" section.

Step 3. Note the position of the outer corners

Imagine a straight, horizontal line running through the center of both eyes. See if the outer corners of your eyes would be above or below this line. If the corners are above the line, you have "up" eyes. Consequently, if they fall below, you have "droopy" eyes.

  • Figuring out a center line can be difficult, so if you need to, you can place a toothpick or thin pencil where an eye line would be. With the other eye, note the relative position of the outer corner.
  • If the outer corners of your eyes are very close to the line, you will need to read on to identify the base shape.
  • If you have "up" or "down" eyes, you can stop reading the "Shape" section and skip to "Position".

Step 4. Pay attention to the crease in your eyelid

With eyes wide open, notice whether the fold is visible or hidden. If it's completely hidden over the top of the eyes or the eyebrow bone, you have "drooping eyelids" (as opposed to "drooping eyes").

  • Stop here if you have identified yourself as someone with "drooping eyelids". This is the base shape of your eyes, so you can skip the rest of this section and go to "Position".
  • If the fold of your eyelid is visible, you need to read the last part of this section.

Step 5. Examine the whites of your eyes

More specifically around the iris - the colored part. If you can see white above or below the iris, you have "round" eyes. If you can't, your eyes are "almond-shaped".

  • Both "round" and "almond" are basic eye shapes.
  • If you don't have any features mentioned in the previous steps, your eyes can only be "round" or "almond-shaped".
  • This is the last parameter you have to look at to identify the shape of your eyes. Another thing to consider after that is their position on the face.

Part 2 of 3: Identifying the position

Step 1. Look in the mirror again

As with shape identification, you will need to observe your eyes closely with a mirror and good lighting. The difference is that you now need both eyes to be visible. You cannot exactly determine the position of the eyes on a single basis.

Step 2. Look at the inner corners of your eyes

More precisely, look at the space between them. If this space is less than the width of one eye, you have eyes close together. If the space is bigger, you have wide eyes.

  • There is also the possibility that the space is roughly the same width as an eye. If that's your case, the distance between your eyes is irrelevant and doesn't need to be taken into account.
  • This step only identifies the distance between the eyes, not the size or depth, so you need to read the rest of the section regardless of your result.

Step 3. Note the depth of your eyes

Most people don't need to take depth into account when determining eye position, but some have very sunken or protruding eyes.

  • Sunken eyes appear to be located far back in the sockets, giving the impression that the upper eyelid is small and short.
  • Protruding eyes, on the other hand, seem to pop out of their sockets and toward the upper lashes.
  • Since this step only identifies the depth of the eyes, you need to read on to determine the size.

Step 4. Compare your eyes to the rest of your face

Compare the size of your eyes to your nose and mouth. It is considered standard for your eyes to be the size of your mouth or nose, or slightly smaller. If they are much smaller, you have small eyes. If they're bigger than your other features, you've got big eyes.

As with depth, most people don't need to pay attention to eye size

Part 3 of 3: Optional makeup tips for eye shape and position

Step 1. Make up according to the format

For most people, the shape of the eyes will determine the best makeup application techniques.

  • For single-lidded eyes, create a gradient of shadows to add dimension. Apply darker colors near the lashes, a more natural color in the center and something brighter near the eyebrows.
  • If you have eyes that are too upturned, apply dark eye shadow or eyeliner to the bottom of the outer corner to make it look a little shorter.
  • If you have droopy eyes, apply eyeliner close to the line of your upper lashes and smooth the eyeshadow all over your eyelid, but only up to two-thirds of the outer corner. This "lifts" the overall look of the eyes.
  • For drooping eyelids, use dull, mid-to-dark shadows and iron them as little as possible so they don't look too flashy.
  • If you have round eyes, use medium to dark shades in the center of the eyelid and use lighter colors to bring out the corners. This way, you make their format more "narrow".
  • If you have almond-shaped eyes, be aware that many consider them the "ideal" shape. You can do almost any makeup you want.

Step 2. Distance counts

If your eyes are noticeably close together or far apart, it's a good idea to take this into account when deciding on your makeup.

  • For eyes that are very close together, use light colors for the inner corners and dark for the outer corners. Highlight outer corners with eyelash mask. That way they will look longer.
  • For those further away, apply dark eyeliner as close as possible to the inner corners and use eyelash mask only on the half closest to the nose. That way, your eyes will look closer together.

Step 3. Remember the depth too

The depth of the eyes doesn't necessarily play a very important role when it comes to makeup, but it's worth thinking about some aspects.

  • If your eyes are too deep, use light shadows on the lids and darker shades near the eyebrows. That way you manipulate your eye shadows and they look more prominent.
  • If your eyes are bulging, use medium to dark colors close to the upper and lower lashes, and don't smoke above the crease of the eyelid. This will simulate more eye shadows, and hence deeper eyes in the sockets.

Step 4. Pay attention to peculiarities involving big or small eyes

The amount of makeup used may vary if your eyes are sizes other than what is considered standard.

  • Small eyes tend to look exaggerated when you wear dark colors, so choose light to medium colors and avoid overloading your lash line with too much eyeliner or mask.
  • Big eyes give you more room to work, so you can play more with the diversity of looks. Medium to dark eyeshadows tend to look better, as light colors can make the eyes look even bigger than they are.
