This wikiHow article will show you how to edit a Microsoft document in your Dropbox without downloading it first.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Using a Computer
Step 1. Go to
You can use any browser you have on your computer, such as Chrome or Firefox, to access Dropbox.
If you are not logged in to your account, please enter your login information to login
Step 2. Click on the document you want to edit
When clicking, a preview of it will open on the screen.
You can edit any Office document such as spreadsheets, slideshows and text documents
Step 3. Click Open
This option will be in the upper right corner of the document. This opens the document in the respective Microsoft Office Online application, such as Word Online (if documents) or Excel Online (if it is a spreadsheet).
Step 4. Make changes to the file
As you work, the changes will automatically be saved to the file in your Dropbox.
Method 2 of 2: Using a Mobile Device
Step 1. Open Dropbox
Its icon has an open blue box and is usually on your home screen or app drawer (if you're using an Android).
Step 2. Tap the file you want to edit
This opens a preview of the file in the Dropbox app.
- You can edit any Office document on your mobile device, including spreadsheets, slideshows and text documents.
- If you do not have the editing application installed (such as Word, Excel or PowerPoint), you will be prompted to install it.
Step 3. Tap Edit
One of the following two things will happen:
- If you already have the appropriate application installed (such as Excel for editing a spreadsheet), the file will open in this application.
- If you don't have the app you need, you'll be directed to its page in the App Store or Play Store. Install it, go back to the file on Dropbox and tap To edit again to edit the document.
Step 4. Make changes to the file
As you edit, the changes will automatically be saved to the file in your Dropbox.
