In this article, you will learn how to set up and use a MEGA cloud storage account, which gives the user 50GB of free space.
Steps
Part 1 of 6: Creating the Account
Step 1. Access the MEGA website in a browser
Step 2. In the middle of the page, there is a red button; is Create an account
Click on it to open the profile configuration screen.
Step 3. Enter your account details, which will be:
- Name and surname.
- E-Mail: you must use an address you have access to.
- Password: create a “strong” password that is difficult to guess.
- Enter the password again: here it must be the same as the password entered earlier.
Step 4. Check the “I agree to the MEGA Terms of Service” checkbox near the bottom of the page
Step 5. Below, click on Create Account to complete the process
Step 6. Check the account in order to access it
Follow the steps below:
- Open the inbox of the email you linked to the account and log in if necessary.
- Click on the message sent by MEGA (MEGA Email Verification Required).
- In the body of the email, select the red “Check my email” button.
Step 7. In the text field “Password” (in the middle of the page), enter it
Step 8. Click on Confirm your account, just below “Password”, to be taken to the MEGA package selection screen
Step 9. Choose Free on the left side of the page
You'll have access to the free MEGA functions, being immediately taken to the storage panel, where you'll be able to create folders and upload files.
Part 2 of 6: Creating Folders
Step 1. Choose New Folder, the tab in the upper right corner of the MEGA page; a pop-up window will appear
Step 2. Enter the name you want to give the folder in the text field in the pop-up
Step 3. Click Create (at the end of the pop-up); the folder will appear in the middle of the screen
Step 4. Access the folder by double clicking on it
Any MEGA folder can be opened this way
Step 5. Go back to the main screen of your MEGA account and double click on the cloud icon in the upper left corner
Step 6. Change the display of files by clicking “☰” (top right corner of the page) to see a list of folders and files in one location
Alternatively, select “⋮⋮⋮” next to “☰” to see the grid-shaped icons.
Step 7. Use folder options
Position the pointer over the folder and click “⋯”, then click:
- “Rename”: allows the user to rename the folder.
- “Move”: opens a menu for you to choose another location for the folder.
- “Copy”: makes a copy of the folder and its contents. You can paste it to any other MEGA storage location.
- “Remove”: puts the file in the Recycle Bin.
Part 3 of 6: Uploading files
Step 1. Open a folder to upload files (if you wish) by double clicking on it
Step 2. Choose Upload Files in the upper right corner of the screen
To send an entire folder, click “Send Folder”
Step 3. Select the item to be transferred
Access its location on your computer and click on the desired file.
To choose multiple files at once, hold Ctrl (Windows) or ⌘ Command (Mac) and click all you want to send
Step 4. Select Open, in the lower right corner of the window, and all chosen files will start to transfer to MEGA
When the upload is an entire folder, just click "Upload"
Step 5. Wait for the upload to complete, which can take seconds or hours, depending on file size and internet speed
Step 6. To delete items from MEGA storage, just move them to the Recycle Bin as follows:
- Click on the file.
- Choose “⋯” in the lower right corner of the file itself.
- From the drop-down menu, choose “Remove”.
- Click "Yes" when asked.
Step 7. Empty the Recycle Bin by clicking on the triangle icon with arrows pointing to each other in the lower left corner of the screen
Choose “Clean Trash” at the top right and confirm by clicking “Empty”.
Part 4 of 6: Downloading Files
Step 1. Find the item you want to download from your cloud storage
For example: if it is in the “Photos” folder, open it
Step 2. Select the file by clicking on it
- If the view is a grid, click the file's icon, not its name.
- To select multiple items, hold Ctrl (Windows) or ⌘ Command (Mac) and click each item.
Step 3. Choose ⋯, the icon in the lower right corner of the file (in grid view), or on the right side of the name (in list view)
A dropdown menu will appear.
Step 4. Select Download… for another window to appear
Step 5. In this new window, you can set the download option
“Standard Download” will download the file normally, while “ZIP Download” will compress it into a ZIP file.
Part 5 of 6: Sharing files
Step 1. Access the folder or item you want to share with another MEGA user
Step 2. Select a folder or file by clicking its icon
Step 3. In the lower right corner (grid view) or right side of the name (in list), click ⋯
A dropdown menu will appear.
Step 4. Click Share to open a new menu
Step 5. In the text field in the middle of the window, enter the email address of the person you want to share the item with
Press Tab ↹ after entering the email to add others
Step 6. Choose a share permission
Click on the “Read Only” checkbox and choose:
- Read Only: The individual receiving the content can view but not edit or share the item.
- Read and Write: User can view and edit the item.
- Full access: the person will be able to share, download, view, edit and delete the content.
Step 7. Click Done at the bottom right corner of the window so that a share link will be forwarded to all desired emails
Recipients must have a MEGA account to be able to open, view, edit or download the item
Part 6 of 6: Using the MEGA app
Step 1. Download the MEGA app, which is completely free for iPhone and Android
Go to your device's app store (the App Store
, from the iPhone, or the Play Store
, on Android) and follow the guidelines below:
- iPhone: Tap “Search” and then the search bar. Enter mega cloud storage and choose “Search” again; now look for the “Get” button next to the app title and enter the Apple ID password (or use the Touch ID fingerprint).
- Android: press on the search field and type mega cloud. Tap “MEGA”, “Install” and “Accept” to finish.
Step 2. Open MEGA by tapping its icon (a red “M” in a white circle) to open the login page
Step 3. Enter your account credentials (email and password) in the respective fields
Tap “Enter”.
On Android, the user must choose “Sign in” before entering the information
Step 4. Give permissions to the app
It is possible that MEGA may request access to the device's camera, photos, and other services; tap “OK” or “Allow”.
However, choose “Skip” if MEGA asks if it should automatically upload videos
Step 5. Create a folder in MEGA as follows:
- Tap “⋯” or “⋮” in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Choose “New Folder” (iPhone) or “Create New Folder” (Android).
- Name the folder.
- Select "Create".
Step 6. Upload a file
Just like on your computer, you can send items to MEGA from your smartphone or tablet:
- Tap “⋯” or “⋮” in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Select "Submit".
- Set a location.
- Choose a file.
- If the upload does not start automatically, tap “Submit” to start the process.
Step 7. Move an item to the Trash as follows:
- Tap and hold the item until a tick appears over it.
- Select the Recycle Bin icon (bottom right corner of the screen); on Android, tap “⋮” and choose “Move to Trash” from the drop-down menu.
- Press “OK” or “Remove” (Android).
Step 8. Clear Recycle Bin if you deleted data
Follow the instructions below:
- Tap “⋯” in the upper right corner of the screen (on Android, choose “Recycle Bin” and skip the next step).
- From the drop-down menu, choose “Recycle Bin”.
- If you are asked to update your account, tap “Skip”.
- In the upper right corner of the screen, select a tick icon. Then press on each item you want to delete; on Android, tap and hold the content to mark it.
- Tap the “Recycle Bin” icon in the lower right corner of the screen. On Android, tap the “X” at the top right of the screen).
- Choose “OK” (“Remove” on Android).
Step 9. It is also possible to share via the MEGA app
Unlike the desktop method, you must copy the file link and send it directly to recipients (who need to have a MEGA account):
- Tap on the file and keep your finger on it until a tick appears next to it.
- Choice
iphoneshare (iPhone only).
- Select “Get Link”.
- Tap “Agree”.
- Choose “Copy link” on iPhone or “Copy” on Android.
- Paste the link into an SMS, email or messaging app to share with desired recipients.
