No matter which delivery service you use, costs always depend on the height, length and width of the package. Therefore, it is crucial that you know the measurements of the box you are going to ship.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Measure the length and perimeter of regular (rectangular) packages

Step 1. Measure the long side of the package

Define which side this is, then measure its size end to end using a tape measure.

  • Round this measure to the nearest integer value.
  • This measurement will be the “length” of the package.

Step 2. Measure the width of the package

The width of your box is the shortest side of the bottom or top (or the open side). Measure the complete distance from one end to the other on this side using a measuring tape.

  • Round this measure to the nearest integer as well.
  • Even if you confuse the height and width measurements, the final calculation doesn't need to be dispensed with. The only side that is absolutely necessary to accurately identify is the length.

Step 3. Measure the height of the package

Using a tape measure, measure your size end to end. This is going to be the “height”.

  • The height must be the only side that has not yet been measured.
  • Approximate this measure to the nearest integer value.

Step 4. Fold the width and height measurements

Multiply the width by two and the height as well.

  • None of these calculations have separate terms, but you need to know them to calculate the final perimeter.
  • Do not double the “length” measurement.
  • For example, if you have a box with a length of 30, 5 cm, width of 10 cm and height of 15, 25 cm, you will need to fold only the height and width:

    • Double the width: 10 x 2 = 20 cm
    • Double height: 15, 25 x 2 = 30, 5 cm

Step 5. Add the doubles of the measurements

Add twice the height to twice the width. The sum equals the perimeter of the box.

  • The perimeter is basically the distance around the thickest part of the box.
  • In the previous example, twice the width was 20 cm and the height was 30.5 cm. Thus, the perimeter would be found by the sum of these two values:

    Perimeter: 20 + 30, 5 cm = 50, 5 cm

Step 6. Calculate the combined length and perimeter value

When sending terrestrial packets, you may need to identify the “global” packet size. This can be found by adding up the length and perimeter measurements.

  • In the previous example, the perimeter of the package was 50, 5 cm and the length was 30, 5 centimeters. To find the total package size, you need to add these two measurements together:

    Size: 50, 5 + 30, 5 = 80, 5 cm

Step 7. Write down the final measurements

Chances are you already have all the necessary steps to ship your order. Record each measurement separately so that you can report the exact measurements to the shipping service.

  • They may ask:

    • Separate length, width and height (C; L; A).
    • Length and perimeter (C; 2L + 2A).
    • The total package size (C + 2L + 2A).

Step 1. Measure the largest part of the package

Define which side is the biggest. This will be the “length” of the package.

  • Measure the longest side end to end using a measuring tape. Only measure along the outer edge if it is the longest point. If the longest part is somewhere between the outer edges of the package, you should measure that distance.
  • Approximate this measure to the nearest integer value.

Step 2. Measure most of the width of the package

Position the pack down so the length is parallel to the table or floor. The other (shorter) parallel side is the width.

  • Identify the greatest distance from this width. It may be on one of the outer edges of the package, but it may lie somewhere in between.
  • Measure this widest part of the package using a measuring tape. Approximate this measure to the nearest integer value.

Step 3. Measure the deepest part of the height

Identify the side that has not yet been measured. It should be perpendicular to the floor or table. That side is the height of the package.

  • Look for the highest point in the package. Measure from that point to the floor or table, depending on where the package is. Do not measure the outer edge of the height unless it is the tallest part.
  • Use a measuring tape and approximate this measurement to the nearest integer value.

Step 4. Think of the packaging as a rectangular box

To calculate the perimeter or total size of the box, use the same method you would use to calculate measurements for a regular rectangular box.

  • If they ask for separate values for length, width, and height, provide the values you just measured.
  • When asked for length and width measurements, provide the ones you just measured. The perimeter must be calculated by adding twice the width and height.

    • Example: length = 15 cm; width = 5 cm; height = 10 cm.
    • Perimeter = (2 * 5 cm) + (2 * 10 cm] = 10 cm + 20 cm = 30 cm.
  • When asked for the total size of the package, add up the perimeter and length.

    • Example: perimeter = 30 cm; Length = 15 cm.
    • Overall size = 30 cm + 15 cm = 45 cm.

Step 1. Measure the length, width and height

Use a measuring tape to measure all three sides of the package. Round this measure to the nearest integer value.

  • When measuring dimensional weight, it doesn't matter which side you call the length, what the width will be, and what the height will be. All you need to do is ensure that they have been correctly measured.
  • For each side, use tape to measure from side to side. Write down each of these values and round that measure to the nearest whole value.
  • Note that these dimensional weight calculations can only be used with imperial measurement units. Calculations will not work for metric measurements.

Step 2. Calculate the volume

The volume of the package is calculated by multiplying the length, width, height.

  • For example, if you want to ship a package with a length of 30, 5 cm, width of 20 cm and height of 10 cm you can calculate the volume by multiplying the three measurements:

    Volume = 30.5 cm x 20 cm x 10 cm = 6100 cubic cm

Step 3. Divide the volume by 166

For orders shipped within the United States or Puerto Rico, divide the package volume by 166. For international shipments, divide by 139.

  • For a package with a volume of 6100 cubic cm

    • Domestic dimensional weight = 6100 cubic cm / 166 = 36.75
    • Dimensional weight international = 6100 cubic cm / 139 = 43.9

Step 4. Take the actual weight

Use a postal scale to measure the package's true weight in kilograms.

If you don't have a postal scale, you will need to know the weight of the package at the time of shipment

Step 5. Compare the dimensional weight with the actual weight

If the dimensional weight is greater than actual, the shipping service may charge you more than the base rate for your package dimensions.

  • Dimensional weight is only an estimate, not an accurate measure.
  • Where a package is lighter or moderately heavier based on its volume, the shipping price will generally be based on dimensional weight, length, width, and volume. Very discrepant weight packages will be billed based on actual weight.
