Many people use smartphones these days, and you can never be too careful when using the internet. If you've purchased an Android phone or tablet for your child, it's a good idea to set up some parental controls to filter content on the device and prevent the little one from being exposed to what they shouldn't. You can create a restricted profile on the system, install a third-party app or set up a restricted control in the Play Store.
Method 1 of 3: Creating Restricted Profiles
Step 1. Open the Settings menu on the device
Locate the gear icon on the home screen or notifications panel and tap it.
Step 2. Scroll the screen and tap Users to open the device profile setup menu
Step 3. Create a restricted profile
Tap Add user or profile and select the Restricted profile option.
Step 4. Create a password
On the next screen, select your preferred security option and configure it. Available options are: PIN, password and unlock pattern.
When finished, a screen will appear listing all the applications installed on the device. Next to each of them, there will be an ON/OFF button
Step 5. Name the profile
Tap the three-line icon next to New Profile on the setup screen. A window will open. Enter the desired name for the user and tap Ok.
Step 6. Select the allowed apps for the profile
If you want your child to have access only to games and not social networks, select only the games on the screen, leaving their button as ON. Restricted applications should be left on OFF option.
Step 7. Open the new restricted profile
Close the Settings menu and lock your phone screen. When pressing the unlock button, two users will appear on the screen. Select the restricted profile and unlock it following the configuration defined above.
If you open the phone menu, only the applications selected for the profile will appear
Method 2 of 3: Using a Third-Party Application
Step 1. Download and install a parental control app from the Play Store
Open the Android store and do a search for "parental control". Choose one of the applications from the list of results and read the software description to choose which one is best for you. Made a decision, tap Install and download the app.
Step 2. Run the app
It will most likely be installed on your phone's main screen.
Once the app opens, check out the configuration options. It is usually possible to separate the apps released to your child with different categories. This will be the screen that the little one will see when using the cell phone
Step 3. Set up a password
Typically, the application password will be used by parents to make changes to settings and disable control mode. This way, your child will not be able to change the application's options or close it accidentally.
- The option to create the password is usually in the Settings menu, which can also be identified by a gear, by three balls or three scratches.
- Find the option Create password, Create PIN or something similar and open it. Enter the desired password and tap Ok.
- For added security, the app may ask you to answer a security question in case you forget your password at some point.
Step 4. Add your child's information in the Settings menu
Enter the little one's name, birthday and gender in the available fields and tap Ok.
Step 5. Add the allowed apps
From the Settings menu, select the appropriate option to release the apps your child should be able to access. When finished, tap Ok.
Step 6. Enable parental control on the device
Close the application and open it again. Enter the password and the screen will only open the apps you released in the previous Step. Okay, now your child can use the device safely.
Your child will not be able to exit parental control mode or change application settings without knowing the password
Method 3 of 3: Setting up parental controls in the Play Store
Step 1. Run the Google Play app
It is represented by a white shopping bag with a colored play button.
Step 2. Open the Settings menu
Open the main menu by tapping the three-line icon in the upper left corner and select the Settings option.
Step 3. Tap Parental Control
The option is available under the User Controls heading.
Step 4. Parental control skill
Tap the Parental control is on option to activate the key.
Step 5. Create a password
The app will ask you to enter the device PIN to confirm enabling control mode. Then create a password to change parental control settings. Confirm the password again and tap Ok.
Step 6. Configure the restrictions
Tap Apps & Games to open an age restriction setting screen. For example, by selecting the Rating 10 year old option, the Play Store will only display apps suitable for children aged ten and over. Select the desired rating.
- Android tablets allow the creation of restricted profiles that control children's access. This option was made available starting with version 4.2 of Android.
- There are many parental control apps available on the Play Store. Some are free and some are paid. The options available will depend on the application, but the most basic ones are usually more than enough.
