Do you have a newborn child? So you know the importance of his weight gain. As much as many babies lose weight early in life, it's normal for them to gain a few pounds quickly - in the first six months of life, they gain 150g to 190g a week. On the little one's first birthday, the ideal is for him to triple the weight of when he was born. To monitor his weight gain, you can weigh him at home or at your pediatrician's office.
Method 1 of 3: Using a Baby Scale at Home
Step 1. Buy a baby scale
Look for a portable device that's accurate and sturdy, with a "walk" that your baby can comfortably fit into. Ideally, the utensil does not have any sharp or rough parts that could harm the child. Look for a scale capable of holding up to 18 kg.
- It is important that the balance is accurate to within 10 g.
- Do a search on the internet and in special stores for children's products to find the best price. It is normal that these products cost a few hundred reais, however.
- There are digital scales, color, practical and with accessories such as arm length gauges.
- Find out if it's not possible to rent a baby scale in your area. This is a practical option for those who cannot invest in the purchase or who do not have space at home.
Step 2. Check that the scale is zeroed
It doesn't matter if the device is digital or analog, it should read 0 when empty. If the idea is to place the baby on the scale with a blanket, reduce the weight of the fabric. To do this, place the blanket on the scale and, as soon as it registers the weight of the cloth, press the "tare" button. The value must be reset to zero again.
Step 3. Weigh the baby
Place the little one on the scale - preferably naked - with one of your hands on his chest, but not touching. The idea is to be ready to catch it if it slips or spins, but without changing the measurement. Check his weight and record it in a notebook so you can monitor weight gain or loss. Fluctuations are common, so weigh the little one every two weeks to analyze his trends.
- Don't heat your head with short-term weight gain or loss unless the child looks sick or has a feeding problem. If anything is wrong, talk to your trusted pediatrician.
- If it's cold and you don't want to take the little one's clothes off, weigh them separately before dressing the child. Subtract the clothes weight from the final value.
- Place the scales on a firm, level place, such as a dining table or on the floor itself. This way, it does not slip and the baby is not at risk of falling.
Method 2 of 3: Weighing the Small With You
Step 1. Weigh yourself on an ordinary scale and record your weight
Ideally, use a scale very accurately. This method is a little less accurate than a baby scale, but it's a lot cheaper.
Ideally, the scale should show the weight in grams, with an accuracy of at least 45 grams
Step 2. Pick up the child and hold him in your lap
Ideally, it should be naked, to increase measurement accuracy. Another option is to weigh yourself by holding the little one's clothes and then subtract that value from the final result.
Step 3. Weigh yourself with the baby
Write down the resulting weight from the scale and subtract its weight alone (or next to the child's clothes, if applicable). The result is the isolated weight of the small.
For example, if you weigh 70 kg and your combined weight with the child is 74, 4 kg, the baby weighs 4, 4 kg
Method 3 of 3: Weighing the Child in the Pediatrician's Office
Step 1. Schedule a visit
Call the doctor and ask if you can weigh the little one in his office. Depending on the case, you can weigh the child without necessarily making an appointment.
Step 2. Ask the provider to weigh the child
The pediatrician will certainly weigh the baby during the consultation, noting the baby's weight on the record. It is normal for the doctor to weigh the child at birth and in the first week of life, repeating the process in subsequent check-ups.
Medical scales are extremely accurate and therefore more expensive. Visually, they are similar to homemade ones, but some have different and more attractive models for the little ones, such as stroller formats
Step 3. Get frequent check-ups
It is important to take the child to the pediatrician on a regular basis, as the doctor will weigh the child and assess weight loss or gain.
