Amazon is one of the biggest online shopping sites, offering a wide variety of books, electronics, furniture and clothing – along with just about anything else you can imagine. You don't need to register to browse Amazon pages, but if you want to buy or sell items (or if you want to create a profile, make wish lists, and receive personalized recommendations), you'll need to set up an account. This only takes a few minutes.

Part 1 of 2: Creating your account

Make an Amazon Account Step 1

Step 2. Enter your personal information

The registration form will ask for your name and email address and will ask you to choose a password.

Note that you can also enter a phone number. This is not mandatory, but it provides better protection for your account. Amazon won't call you, so don't worry about it – this phone is used for security purposes only

The address book is an optional feature, but many people find it creates a better shopping experience. Go to "Your Account/Your Account" and click on "Manage Address Book/Manage Address Book." You will be asked to enter additional addresses, for yourself and for the people you can buy gifts for.

By tagging an address as a "Gift Address/Gifting Address," Amazon will automatically include a gift receipt with orders shipped to that address

Step 4. Customize your profile

Go to "Your Account/Your Account" again and click on "Your Public Profile/Your Public Profile" under the subheading "Personalization/Personalization". You will be asked to enter the details you want to make visible on your public profile (name, location, birthday, website, photo). When finished, click on the "I have read the Terms and Conditions" area, then press continue. You will be asked to enter more details about yourself. Press the "Finish/Finish" button, and your profile will be complete.

  • If privacy is important to you, be careful to limit what types of information will be visible on your profile. You can choose to list only your first name and your general location, for example.
  • Be careful not to enter more than 4000 characters when you are entering additional details. This is the limit that Amazon will store.

You will be taken to a window where you can choose to connect your Amazon account with your Facebook account. Step 6. Create a Wish List

To create your own wish list, go to "Your Account/Your Account" and click on "Wish List/Wish Lists." On the right side, you will see a yellow button labeled "Create your Wish List/Create your Wish List". Click on it. Now when you search for items on Amazon, you can add them to your wish list by clicking the "Add to Wish List/Add to Wish List" button.

  • If you want to name your wish list (by default it will be called "New Wish List/New Wish List"), just click the "Edit list name/Edit list name" link after setting up the list.
  • If you leave your list as "public", it will make it easier to choose gifts for your friends and family. They will be able to look at your list and choose something.
  • You can create a specific Wedding List in the same way: just choose "Wedding List/Wedding List" instead of "Wish List/Wish List" in the "Your Account/Your Account" area. You will be asked to enter information about yourself, your partner and your wedding date. Once set up, this list works just like a more traditional record.

If you find yourself using Amazon a lot, consider Prime Subscription. You have to pay an annual fee, but you get free two-day shipping on many articles, and free streaming of many movies and TV shows

  • Once you start shopping and rating items, Amazon will offer you personalized recommendations. Click "Recommended For You/Recommended For You" on your personalized homepage to see your recommendations.
  • Don't forget to check the "Today's Deals/Today's Deals" tab. You can see the different bargains offered daily, and sometimes you might get lucky and find something you want for a ridiculously cheap price.
