A macchiato is an espresso and foam-based drink, much like a cappuccino or latte. The main difference is the proportions of coffee, milk and foam. A traditional macchiato takes just one shot of espresso, supplemented with a small amount of steamed milk. However, the drink can also be taken in chilled and flavored versions. The different types of macchiato can be found in almost any coffee shop. But if you want to prepare this delight at home, you just need some equipment.
- 20 g of coffee beans.
- 60 ml of water.
- 30 ml of milk.
Serves 1 cup.
- ¼ cup (60 ml) of espresso coffee.
- 1 cup (235 ml) of cold milk.
- 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of sweetener or syrup.
- 5 ice cubes.
Serves 1 cup.
Method 1 of 3: Making a traditional macchiato
Step 1. Grind the beans
The macchiato is made with espresso coffee. To prepare a standard double dose of espresso, you need approximately 20 g of coffee beans, which must be placed inside a grinder. The amount can be adjusted according to your taste. The important thing is that you grind the beans until they form a powder.
- The ground coffee must have the same consistency as salt for you to be able to make a good espresso.
- You can also buy industrialized coffee powder at the supermarket if you don't have a grinder at home.
Step 2. Put the powder in the filter holder
Remove the filter holder from the coffee maker, be it domestic or professional. Make sure it's clean and fill it with ground coffee. Gently tap the filter holder in your hand to distribute the powder, then squeeze the coffee to compress it.
- If you don't have a home or professional espresso machine, use a stovetop coffee maker. Just put the powder in the inner basket and distribute it evenly with your finger.
- Prepare a strong brewed coffee if you cannot make an espresso.
Step 3. Make an espresso
Place the filter holder back on the coffee maker and rotate it to hold it in place. Then place a small cup under the filter holder, fill the coffee maker with water and turn it on. Allow the coffee to pass for about 30 seconds and stir the espresso to distribute the crema well, that is, the foam accumulated on the top of the cup.
If using a stovetop coffee maker, fill the reservoir with water to the last row. Then place the filter inside the reservoir and close. Prepare the espresso over medium heat until the top of the reservoir starts to bubble and serve in a small cup
Step 4. Vaporize the milk
Transfer the chilled milk to a tall metal container, slanted at 45º in relation to the steamer. Insert the vaporizer into the liquid and turn it on. Heat the milk until the volume increases and the container is very hot. Then take the steamer out of the milk and clean it with a damp cloth.
Steamed milk should be around 60 ºC
Step 5. Flip the milk over the coffee and serve the drink hot
When the milk is done, turn it over the espresso. With a spoon, pour some of the froth over the milk. Serve the macchiato immediately and enjoy it straight or with sugar and cinnamon.
Method 2 of 3: Customizing the Drink
Step 1. Add flavorings
Flavors are sweet syrups that can be added to coffee and other beverages. They come in a variety of flavors and can be found in supermarkets and some coffee shops. Use a tablespoon (15 ml) of syrup for each cup right after making the espresso.
Macchiatos are usually flavored with vanilla, caramel and chocolate
Step 2. Top up the drink with whipped cream
Traditionally, macchiatos are not served with whipped cream, but you can always add an extra touch to your coffee. After adding the flavors and milk, give the macchiato a final touch with a portion of whipped cream.
Step 3. Decorate with chocolate
A pinch of chocolate chips is perfect to make any coffee-based drink even more delicious, especially if it is also covered with whipped cream. Once the macchiato is ready, scrape a piece of chocolate directly onto the milk or cream.
You can use either milk or dark chocolate or white chocolate
Step 4. Add cinnamon to make the coffee more spicy
Another way to change the flavor of macchiato is with a dash of ground cinnamon. The ingredient must be added right after the milk, without being mixed with the coffee. If you intend to serve the drink with whipped cream, add the cinnamon last.
You can also try serving the macchiato with nutmeg, ginger and cardamom
Method 3 of 3: Making a super simple iced macchiato
Step 1. Prepare the espresso
To make a chilled macchiato, start by making the espresso in a professional machine or in a stovetop coffee maker. Another option is to make a strong pot of coffee instead of an espresso.
To make regular coffee very strong, choose a dark roast and strain the equivalent of two cups with four tablespoons (20 g) of powder
Step 2. Mix the ingredients
Put the milk and ice in a blender along with the liquid sweetener, which can be honey, agave or maple syrup. You can also choose to use a vanilla or caramel flavoring, for example, to add extra flavor to the drink in addition to sweetening it. Finally, add the coffee.
Use only ½ (120 ml) of milk if you are making macchiato with regular coffee
Step 3. Beat the ingredients
Turn the blender on to the crushing function and blend the mixture for about a minute. The drink should be very liquid, without a whole bit of ice.
Step 4. Serve the chilled macchiato
Pour the drink into a glass and serve. To make it even more delicious, try adding a little drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce.
