Sweet potato is a delicious and healthy tuber that is consumed by many during the holiday season. But there are several ways to cook and prepare this potato to be served at any time of year, including on the grill. You can grill in slices, cut in half or even a sweet potato casserole with butter and brown sugar. No matter how you cook, the grilled vegetable makes a great accompaniment to a picnic or barbecue, or even alone as a delicious snack.


Grilled sweet potato slices

  • 3 sweet potatoes;
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) of canola oil;
  • 1 tablespoon (20 g) of salt;
  • 2 teaspoons (5 g) of lemon zest;
  • ¼ teaspoon (1 g) of cayenne pepper;
  • Black pepper ground to taste;
  • ¼ cup (5 g) of fresh cilantro.

Makes four servings.

  • 1 large washed sweet potato;
  • 1 tablespoon (15 g) of softened butter;
  • Salt to taste;
  • Black pepper ground to taste;

  • 2 large, washed sweet potatoes;
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) of melted butter;
  • 2 tablespoons (25 g) of brown sugar;
  • 1 teaspoon (2 g) of ground cumin;

  • Salt to taste;
  • Black pepper ground to taste.

Step 1. Preheat the grill

Switch on or light the grill and let it preheat to an average temperature of approximately 180 °C. You can cook the sweet potatoes on any type of grill you like, including:

  • Gas powered;
  • Firewood;
  • Coal;

Step 2. Wash the potatoes under running water

When washing them, use a brush or cloth to scrub the bark well and remove the dirt. Pat them dry using a clean towel and place them on a chopping board.

The husk of the vegetable is very thin and rich in nutrients, so it is not necessary to peel it before grilling it

Step 3. Cut the potato into slices

Hold it firmly with one hand and use a sharp knife to carefully cut it in half the length. Place the two halves cut side down on the chopping board and cut each into quarters and each quarter into eighths. Each potato will form eight slices.

You can also cut in the direction of the width of the vegetable, forming 5mm thick slices instead of slices if you wish

Drizzle the diced potato with the sauce and use a spoon to mix it well in the bowl and coat all the pieces evenly. You can season the vegetable with a teaspoon (2 g) of any herb or spice you like, including:

  • Cinnamon;

  • Paprika;
  • Chili powder;
  • Rosemary;
  • Thyme;
  • Chipotle powder.

Step 6. Arrange the slices on the hot grill

Use a tongs to transfer the potatoes to the grill and arrange them diagonally in a single layer, leaving them with the classic grill marks.

Step 7. Cover and grill the vegetable for 40 minutes

Place a metal lid or bowl over the top to trap the heat and cook the potatoes more quickly. Turn them over twice while cooking. Continue until they are very soft, so you can easily pierce them with a fork, and well browned.

Remove slices from the grill with a spatula or tongs. Arrange them on a plate and finish with a little coriander, salt and pepper to taste. Serve with your favorite sauces such as ketchup, parsley or chipotle mayonnaise.

Step 1. Preheat the grill

Switch on or light in medium or high temperature until it reaches 190 °C. You can use a wood, charcoal, electric or gas grill to cook the sweet potatoes.

Step 2. Cut the potato in half

Transfer the washed vegetable to a chopping board, hold it firmly in one hand, and with the other, cut the potato in half the length with a very sharp knife.

Use a butter knife to spread half a teaspoon (5g) of butter on the cut side of each potato piece. Then sprinkle each one with salt and pepper to taste.

  • You can also spice it up with any herb or spice you like, including cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne, or rosemary.
  • Replace butter with margarine or your preferred oil.

Step 4. Wrap each piece of potato with aluminum foil

Cut two pieces of aluminum foil measuring 30 x 45 cm. Place each potato in the center and roll it tight.

Use a stainless steel tong or spatula to transfer the potatoes to the grill. Cook for nearly an hour, turning them halfway through the cooking time. The vegetable will be ready when it is soft and soft enough to pierce with a fork.

Place the melted butter in the bowl with the potatoes and sprinkle with sugar, cumin, cayenne, salt and black pepper. Mix everything to coat the potato cubes well with all the ingredients.

  • To vary the dish, cut a yellow or orange pepper into cubes, removing the stalks and seeds first. Add cubes to bowl and mix with other ingredients.
  • You can use any sweetener you like in place of brown sugar, including white sugar, honey or maple syrup.

Cut two 12 x 18 cm pieces of aluminum foil, divide the sweetpotato mixture evenly, and transfer half to the center of each piece. Roll tightly to keep the casserole tightly sealed.

Step 4. Grill the casserole for up to half an hour

Use a spatula or tongs to transfer the foil packets to a preheated 190°C grill. Cook for 20 to 30 minutes, turning the whole package over every 10 minutes. The casserole will be ready when the potatoes are tender.
