4 Ways to Make Milk Foam

Frothed milk is a great addition to coffees, teas and hot chocolate. You can froth milk in many different ways and with basic kitchen utensils such as an electric mixer, blender and whisk. Another option is to just shake the milk in a glass jar until it's very frothy.

Method 1 of 4: Stirring and heating in microwave to create foam

Foam Milk Step 1

Step 1. Fill a glass bottle with cold milk

Put only the amount you want to drink. However, as it is necessary to leave space for the milk to expand and create froth, do not fill more than half of the bottle.

Use skim milk, which is easier to froth

Foam Milk Step 2

Step 2. Shake the bottle for 30 to 60 seconds

Place the lid on the jar and shake it vigorously until the milk froths and doubles in size.

Foam Milk Step 3

Step 3. Heat in microwave for 30 to 45 seconds

Remove the cap and place the bottle in the device. In a standard 1,000 watt microwave oven, heat the milk for 35 to 40 seconds.

On a more powerful device, heat up for just 30 seconds

Foam Milk Step 4

Step 4. Remove the vial from the microwave

As it will be very hot, use a kitchen towel to handle it. Put the frothed milk in coffee, tea or hot chocolate immediately.

Method 2 of 4: Using a Mixer

Foam Milk Step 5

Step 1. Heat the milk on the stove

Put the desired amount in a saucepan and bring to medium or low heat. Heat the milk to 65 or 70 °C, checking the temperature with a thermometer.

  • Use skim or whole milk.
  • In the absence of a thermometer, heat the milk until it starts to create steam, but before coagulation, which occurs at 71 °C.
Foam Milk Step 6

Step 2. Beat the milk on low or medium speed

Remove from heat and place the mixer in the pan. Turn on and beat the milk until the desired amount of froth forms or until it doubles in size.

In the absence of an electric mixer, use a hand mixer to create the foam. Beat vigorously with a back and forth motion until frothy, which may take a minute

Foam Milk Step 7

Step 3. Pour the frothed milk into the drink

When adding milk, use a spoon to hold the foam. Then transfer the foam to hot chocolate, tea or coffee.

Method 3 of 4: Foaming in a Blender

Foam Milk Step 8

Step 1. Heat the milk to 65 to 70 °C on the stove

Put the desired amount in a saucepan and bring to medium or low heat. Then heat it until it starts to form steam or until it reaches a temperature of 65 to 70 °C.

  • If the milk starts to curdle, it is too hot and you need to start the process over again.
  • Use skim or whole milk.
Foam Milk Step 9

Step 2. Pulse at medium speed

Put the milk in a blender, cover and pulse until the desired amount of foam is created.

Foam Milk Step 10

Step 3. Spoon the foam into the drink

First, use a spoon to hold the froth when pouring hot milk into the drink. Then transfer the foam alone. Garnish it with powdered chocolate or cinnamon.

Method 4 of 4: Using a manual milk frother

Foam Milk Step 11

Step 1. Place the chilled milk in a glass jar until reaching the maximum line

You can use skim or whole milk, but whole milk works best for this method.

Foam Milk Step 12

Step 2. Pump the milk for 30 to 45 seconds

Fit the lid and secure it to the pump above the jar. Pump vigorously up and down until foam forms. Then remove the cover with the pump.

Foam Milk Step 13

Step 3. Place the jar in the microwave

Heat the milk for 30 seconds on an ordinary 1000 watt appliance. The microwave will heat and stabilize the milk, leaving the foam a little firmer.

Only take it to the appliance if the jar is microwave safe. If not, preheat the milk in the oven to 65 to 70 °C before placing it in the jug for pumping

Foam Milk Step 14

Step 4. Remove the kettle from the microwave

Use a cloth to handle it as it will be very hot. Add the foam to your favorite drink and enjoy.
