Ginger can be enjoyed as a delicacy or a spice, or it can even be used for medicinal purposes, such as relieving an upset stomach. It is commonly used in savory savory dishes, in sweets like cookies and even in cocktails like the Moscow Mule. Ginger is a delicious root, but the problem is that it's hard to use it all at once, which leads to the storage problem. If you want your ginger to last a few weeks - or even a few months - it's best to know different ways to store it. To learn, just follow these steps.
Method 1 of 5: Knowing the Basics
Step 1. Choose the freshest ginger
If you want your ginger to last as long as possible, you have to choose the freshest roots and use it right after purchase. To find the freshest ones, look for ginger with a fresh, spicy fragrance and a very smooth rind. They should feel heavy and firm in your hands. Avoid any ginger that is wrinkled or a little soft, as these are already passing.
- Avoid any ginger that is wet, damp or moldy.
- Decide whether you want to store the ginger in the fridge or freezer. If you know you're going to be using ginger soon, it's best to keep it in the fridge so it won't be difficult to peel, grind, or use in the future. Ginger lasts up to three weeks in the refrigerator; if you know you won't be using it before that time, better store it in the freezer.

To store ginger in a sealed plastic bag, simply place it unpeeled in the bag, taking care to get all the air out. Put it in your refrigerator's vegetable drawer and it will stay crisp and fresh for several weeks. When compared to other methods, such as storing it in a paper bag or wrapping it in a paper towel and then putting it in the bag, this method has proven to be more efficient.
If the ginger is already peeled, this method will work too, but the shelf life will not be as long
Step 2. Store ginger in a paper towel and paper bag
Save a piece of unpeeled ginger by wrapping it completely in paper towels. Then put it in a paper bag. Take care to get all the air out of the bag before closing it. Put the ginger in your refrigerator's vegetable drawer and store it for a few weeks.
Step 3. Store ginger in a paper bag
If you're in a hurry, simply put the ginger in a paper bag and store it in your refrigerator's vegetable drawer. Ginger won't last as long as the other methods, but this is a quick and easy trick if you know you're going to use ginger in a week. This is a method that also serves to quickly store herbs such as dill or cilantro.
Step 4. Store fresh, peeled ginger in brandy
Simply place the peeled fresh ginger in a jar or sealed container and dip it in brandy or other acidic liquid. The most commonly used liquids are: cachaça, vodka, dry sherry, sake, rice wine, rice vinegar and fresh lemon juice. Vodka and cachaça are the most popular brandies. Vodka keeps ginger longer without taking away so much of its flavor.
While this is a proven storage method, be aware that the liquid will slightly alter the flavor of the ginger
Method 3 of 5: Storing in the Freezer
Step 1. Wrap the ginger in PVC film and store it in a sealed plastic bag
Carefully remove a piece of PVC and wrap the unpeeled ginger once or twice until it is completely covered by the plastic. Then place the ginger in a resealable plastic bag, taking care to get all the extra air out. Put the bag in the freezer and enjoy the ginger for the next few months.
Step 2. Freeze chopped ginger
First, peel the ginger and chop it into small pieces. Then spread the ginger on a baking paper lined tray, separated into teaspoon-sized or soup-sized portions. Place the tray in the freezer until the ginger is completely frozen, then transfer to an airtight container or a jar with a tight lid. Place in the freezer and enjoy this chopped ginger for up to six months.
Step 3. Freeze sliced ginger
Cut the ginger to the appropriate size for the dish you want to make, either into fingertip-size pieces or into sticks. You can mix and match, cutting the ginger to any size you like while keeping the rind. Then store the ginger in a closed container and place it in the refrigerator.
Step 4. Cut the peeled ginger into slices
If you know you're going to cook the ginger in slices, you can peel it, cut it into this shape, and then place it in a glass bowl or other open container that you can take to the freezer. This method allows you to keep the ginger for a few weeks.

Method 5 of 5: Storing Ginger in a Vacuum Sealed Bag
This method allows you to keep the ginger longer than the previous method.
Step 1. Place the ginger to be stored in a vacuum-sealable bag
Step 2. Remove the air from the vacuum bag as indicated by the product
Step 3. Add a label with the procedure date
Take it to the freezer. Use as needed.
- If desired, you can also store well-chopped or blended ginger in the dry sherry mixture rather than in chunks. The procedure allows you to store more ginger so you can use it normally later. If you choose to do this, add a small amount of sherry to the blender to help blend.
- It is best to grate the ginger on a ceramic grater. It's much easier to use one of these than a regular cheese grater. These graters have high edges that keep the ginger from slipping out. Of course, they never rust and can be used for other foods, such as chocolate or nutmeg.
