While it is possible to cook rice in a pan on the stove or in a crockpot, it is also possible to prepare it in the microwave. You can make both brown and white rice in just a few minutes. After cooking the rice, season it and serve.

  • Rice;
  • Water;
  • Salt;
  • Chicken or vegetable broth (optional);
  • Seasonings of your choice (optional).

Part 1 of 3: Mixing Rice and Water

Step 1. Rinse the rice

Rinse the rice you are going to use on tap. Use a sieve or colander. Then shake to remove excess water.

Step 2. Check the proportion on the package

Rice is mixed with water before cooking, but the proportions can vary. Check the instructions on the package to use the correct amount of rice and water. In general, for every two parts of rice, you should use one part of water.

If you add too much water, the rice will become soggy, but if you add too little, it will get hard. Use a greater or lesser amount of water, depending on the texture you want to get

Step 3. Add the rice and water in a microwave-safe bowl

Before cooking rice, make sure the bowl can be microwaved. If unsure, use another bowl. Pour rice and water into it.

  • Use a bowl a little bigger than necessary, as rice always expands after cooking. A larger pot will also prevent leakage from boiling.
  • No need to mix the ingredients.

Part 2 of 3: Cooking rice in the microwave

Cook Rice in a Microwave Step 4

Step 1. Cook rice at high intensity

Set the microwave to the highest intensity you have. Cook for ten minutes. Do not cover rice during this period.

Step 2. Continue cooking rice at low intensity

After ten minutes, set the microwave to the lowest intensity and cook the rice for another 15 minutes. Leave the rice uncovered.

  • Brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice. When preparing it, cook for another 20 minutes instead of 15.
  • Do not mix rice while cooking.

Step 3. Soften the rice with a fork

After cooking the rice for another 15 minutes, it will be ready to eat. Take a fork and gently soften it for more texture.

  • If the rice is still hard, cook it for a few more minutes and then check again.
  • Be careful when removing rice from the microwave. If you have leaked some water, wait a few minutes before picking up the bowl and wear thermal gloves.

Part 3 of 3: Seasoning Rice

Step 1. Use a seasoning based on salt, pepper and butter

Mix a pinch of salt, pepper and a tablespoon of butter into the rice for extra flavor. You can add the butter to the water before cooking the rice, or you can melt it to add it after cooking.

Step 2. Add spices from other dishes to the rice

If rice is an accompaniment to your meal, use the same seasonings as other foods to season it so it will match the dish served.

For example, if you are preparing salmon, add some of the marinade you used on the fish to the rice after cooking it

Step 3. Use chicken or vegetable stock in water

If you want to season the rice while cooking, use chicken or vegetable stock in the water. Dissolve the broth well in the water before adding the rice so that the flavor is well blended and not concentrated.
