Many employers administer oral swab tests to track drug use among their employees. It is much easier to pass oral swab tests than urine or blood tests, as they usually do not detect drug use for more than two days. However, this technology is recent and constantly changing, so it's best to take certain precautions. Most of the guidelines found on the internet are ineffective or even harmful, but there are a few small ways to increase your chances. In fact, the only really effective way to guarantee that you will pass the test is to abstain from using it for at least 2-3 days before the swab.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Passing the test with no preparation time

Step 1. Suck on sour candies to make your saliva more acidic

The more acidic and sugary your saliva is, the harder it is to detect drugs in it. That is, if you only have five to 10 minutes before passing a mandatory test, suck on two or three sour citrus candies. Suck them (instead of chewing) to extract as much of the citrusy, acidic flavor as possible from the mints.

Several studies have shown that swab testing for drug use had lower detection rates right after people sucked on citrus candy

Step 2. Chew gum to increase saliva production

Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, diluting the concentration of any drug in saliva. Gum will also change the chemical composition of oral fluids, which may make the oral swab test less effective. If you have a choice, opt for cinnamon or strong citrus flavors.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to take a pack of gum with you daily to work if you're worried about a pop quiz

Step 3. Rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide five minutes before testing

Peroxide is known as an "adulterant": a chemical that interferes with the ability to accurately detect drugs in your saliva. Take a sip of peroxide before your test and rinse for 30 seconds. Then spit in the sink. Be careful not to accidentally swallow the peroxide. This could cause internal damage.

  • If you don't have peroxide, try using a mouthwash, which is also adulterant.
  • Avoid using alcohol-based mouthwashes as they can lead to a false positive result for alcohol abuse.

Method 2 of 2: Preparing in advance

Step 1. Avoid using any drug within 72 hours of testing

The oral swab test can only reliably detect medications taken in the past 48–72 hours. Most oral swab tests are administered to check for marijuana use, as the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) compounds in marijuana are easily detectable in saliva. To be even more secure, avoid using any other drugs you may have been using for 72 hours. It is recommended to go drug-free for at least 72 hours to be sure, especially if you are a heavy user.

Also avoid taking cough suppressant medications that contain codeine

Step 2. For 48 hours before testing add high fat foods to your diet

In the bloodstream (and saliva) THC molecules easily bind to fat; when fat is eliminated from your body, it carries THC along with it, making drug use much more difficult to detect. So, for the two days before the oral test, eat high-fat foods as part of every meal, helping to eliminate THC from your body.

Fast-food or ultra-processed restaurant foods are high in fat. For a healthier option, however, choose to eat tuna or salmon, as well as avocados, whole eggs, nuts and cheese

Step 3. Drink water throughout the day to maintain saliva production

In theory, newly produced saliva will have lower concentrations of drug-related chemicals compared to older saliva. Stay hydrated by drinking water, herbal tea, or fruit juice on a regular basis so you can produce more saliva. Also avoid drinking fluids that dehydrate your body, including coffee, black tea and alcohol.

Chemicals enter saliva through the bloodstream, but cannot be "removed" in the same way. Therefore, there is no harm in increasing your saliva production for 48 to 72 hours before the test

Step 4. Brush your teeth twice a day to remove old saliva.

This is not a very effective method, but it can slightly decrease the amount of THC (or other drug chemicals) remaining in your mouth. Use a new toothbrush and a familiar brand of toothpaste, scrubbing your teeth for at least 2 minutes after breakfast and dinner. Brush your tongue and cheeks as well as your teeth. Rinse your mouth and spit out at the end.

Brushing your teeth thoroughly and often won't work miracles, but it will ensure that old oral fluids don't build up in your mouth

Step 5. gargle every 15 minutes for the four to five hours prior to testing.

If you arrive at work and find that you will pass an oral swab test in four or five hours, don't panic! Enter the bathroom, drink plenty of water and gargle for 20 to 30 seconds. Repeat this every 15 minutes until testing time. Rinsing your mouth will dilute the concentration of THC (or other substances) in your saliva, making it difficult for the test to detect.

The effect this will have will be small and short-lived. However, it is one of the simplest measures to take

Tips

  • Being in the same room as marijuana smoke is unlikely to alter your saliva for more than 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Eating poppy seeds can test positive for heroin, but usually only for up to an hour. More recently, most drug testers follow the updated guidelines, which seek to avoid longer periods of false positives from ingesting poppy seeds. However, this also makes them less likely to accept the "excuse" for consuming poppy seeds.
  • The oral swab will not bring any results if you do not get enough saliva. Showing up with a dry mouth will only make the test longer and more unpleasant.
