The practice of writing words on the calculator during math classes has been a tradition for several decades. The number of words you can type into the calculator is huge! Older devices are the most suitable, so ask your parents if they still have the calculator they used at school. Read the article to the end and be impressed by the number of words you can reproduce!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Using Hexadecimal Mode
Step 1. Change the numeric base to hexadecimal
Not all devices have hexadecimal mode, but if yours does, take advantage of it to gain more letters and expand as many words as possible. You know the calculator supports hexadecimal numbers when you see the letters A through F on the keyboard.
Casio and HP models usually have hexadecimal mode
Step 2. Combine letters and numbers to write the words
The hexadecimal mode allows you to enter the letters A, B, C, D, E and F. Also, you can use the number 1 for I, 0 for O and 5 for S.
- For example, write the word supper with CE1A.
- Other examples are: OCA, OBA, ACASO, DATA and CAIA.
Step 3. Create even more combinations by turning the calculator upside down
By inverting the fixture and using hexadecimal mode, you can change b to q and d to p. In addition, you can enter the letters O, D, I, Z, E, h, A, S, g/q, L, B, and G from the numbers. The possibilities are practically endless!
- b=q
- d=p
- 0=O/D
- 1=I
- 2=Z
- 3=E
- 4=h/A
- 5=S
- 6=g/q
- 7=L
- 8=B
- 9=G/b
- You can also use the number 6 in place of the word you.
Method 2 of 2: Turning the calculator upside down
Step 1. Use specific numbers to represent the letters
Each of the digits looks like a different letter when they're upside down, so you can compose a lot of words. Here are the correspondences between letters and numbers:
- 0=O/D
- 1=I
- 2=Z
- 3=E
- 4=h/A
- 5=S
- 6=g/q
- 7=L
- 8=B
- 9=G/b
Step 2. Write a word on the paper
See if you can type the word into the calculator by looking at the list above. If the word has a letter that is not present in the list, it is because it is not possible to put it on the device.
- "HELLO" is a very easy word to type on the calculator. See that all letters are in the list.
- Other examples are: SAL, BALL, SIX and GAZE. Note the correspondences between letters and numbers and think of the words you can write.
Step 3. Enter the numbers corresponding to each letter
These are the numbers you have to use to write the word on the calculator.
To write HELLO, the numbers are 074
Step 4. Enter numbers backwards
Start with the last letter of the word. When you turn the calculator upside down, the order of the letters is reversed, meaning you have to start with the last letter and end with the first.
- For example, to write HELLO, you have to reverse the order of the numbers, getting 470.
- If the word ends with, start with 0 and add a decimal point (.) to preserve it even after pressing Enter or =.
Step 5. Press Enter and invert the calculator
Some models have the Enter button, while others only have the =. Press any one of them and turn the calculator over so the top is facing you. That way you'll see the word!
Step 6. Try some examples
To find out what's writeable and what's not, take a look at the list above. Here are more examples:
- 5320974 corresponds to ALGOZES.
- 5013474 corresponds to OTHERS.
- 300918 corresponds to MUSTACHE.
- 30748 corresponds to BUCKET.
- 37148 corresponds to DANCE.
- 0.93749 corresponds to GALEGO.
- 40705 corresponds to WELDING.
- 0.9137 corresponds to LEIGO.
- 54738 corresponds to FINE.
- 50738 corresponds to BEAUTIFUL.
- 3008 corresponds to BODE.
- 41300 corresponds to HATES.
- 74301 corresponds to IDEAL.
- 0.7154 corresponds to ASYLUM.
- 44708 corresponds to BUBBLE.
- 0.735 corresponds to SEAL.
- 3080 corresponds to OBOE
- 709 corresponds to GOL.
- 748079 corresponds to GLOBAL.
Tips
- Use an old calculator to make the results more readable.
- On some graphing calculators, such as the Casio FX series, there are the letters y and m. To get the letters g and r, use the Shift button.
