Smoking a bong for the first time can be confusing, but it will become easier as you become aware of what you are doing. Before you start using it, you will need to fill it with water and fill the bowl. From there, just light the bowl to fill the chamber with smoke, after which you can inhale it. If you are a beginner, you should take it easy until you get used to downing with a bong.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Preparing the bong
Step 1. Fill it with water
Mineral water or tap water will do. The amount of water depends on the size of the bong: make the surface 2.5 cm above the tip of the rod (or the glass tube that inserts into the bong). If you use more water than that, you may end up getting wet when you swallow.
Fill the bong with water by pouring it directly through the mouthpiece (ie the top opening)
Step 2. Macerate the marijuana
With your fingers, scissors or a dichavator, grind the marijuana well. Set aside a few larger pieces (approximately 5 x 5 mm) to chock the bottom of the bowl.
If you are going to use a dichavador, uncap it and place two or three sprouts between the accessory's teeth. Cover it and turn the lid from side to side to grind the marijuana
Step 3. Fill the bowl
It is a funnel-like piece that fits into the top of the glass rod. First, take the large pieces of marijuana you've separated and place them in the bottom of the bowl; they will keep the ground marijuana from being pulled into the bong when you suck in the air. Then pick up some of the ground marijuana with your fingertips and pour it into the bowl.
- Don't overtighten the marijuana, or the air won't enter the bong. If you end up overcompressing it, use a long, thin instrument, such as a straightened paper clip, to break it up.
- If you're going to smoke alone, don't fill the bowl more than half full. You can replenish it later if this quantity is insufficient.
- If you're going to smoke with friends, you can fill it to the brim. But it's important not to overload it, or the paint could fall out of it.
Part 2 of 3: Lighting the bong
Step 1. Get in a comfortable position
If you are a beginner, you should sit near a table or bench where you can put your bong if you have a coughing fit. Also, stay near an open window if you don't want the room to be filled with smoke.
Do not leave any flammable objects near you
Step 2. Hold the bong with your non-dominant hand
Wrapping your hand around the neck of the bong (the long portion that connects the mouthpiece to the water reservoir) or holding it by the base, light the bowl. Before that, it's important to see that you're holding the bong firmly.
Step 3. Take a few deep breaths
Breathe using your diaphragm (the muscle under your lungs). Filling the body with oxygen makes it easier to inhale and decreases the propensity to cough.
Step 4. Fit the mouth to the mouthpiece
Place your lips inside the mouthpiece and push the area around the mouth against it so that there is no exit for the smoke to escape.
Step 5. Light the lighter with your free hand
Use a regular pocket lighter. To avoid burning yourself, hold it upright and trigger it with your thumb while wrapping it with your other fingers.
Step 6. Tilt the lighter to the side so that it touches the bowl with the flame
Look for an angle that only burns the edge of the marijuana's surface so that it lasts longer.
Part 3 of 3: Inhaling the Smoke
Step 1. Inhale slowly as you light the bowl
At this point, the smoke will still not reach your lungs. Inhaling only serves to bring the smoke into the chamber. You will be able to observe the interior of the bong becoming more and more misty as it fills with smoke.
If you've never used a bong, only fill the chamber halfway with the first few drags so you don't put too much strain on your lungs
Step 2. Extinguish the lighter when the amount of smoke in the chamber is adequate
You can either put the lighter aside or continue to hold it. Stop sucking air without taking your face out of the mouthpiece, or smoke will escape.
Step 3. Detach the bowl from the stem and inhale the accumulated smoke
Using the same hand you used to light the bowl, take it off the glass rod and inhale the smoke deeply so that it reaches your lungs.
If you cannot inhale all the smoke from the chamber at once, remove the mouth from the mouthpiece and cover it with your hand so that the smoke does not escape. When you're ready to swallow the rest, remove your hand from the mouthpiece and quickly put your mouth back on
Step 4. Hold the smoke in your lungs for a moment
Holding it for a long time does not enhance the effect and can even be harmful to health. Just two or three seconds is enough to get high.
Step 5. Exhale the smoke
Blow out the smoke (remember to do this from a window if you don't want to permeate the room). If other people are in the company, tilt your head back and release the smoke into the air, thus preventing it from being thrown in someone's face.
Step 6. Return the bowl to the stem
If you're smoking alone, just relight the bowl and take another drag. If you're in a group, it would be good to pass the bong and lighter to the next person.
