Fitting a headboard to the bed is a simple task. Floor and bracket headboards are secured by placing screws in the brackets and in the proper screw holes. You can also mount the headboard directly on the wall instead of attaching it to the bed.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Choosing the Right Size

Step 1. Measure the distance between the screw holes before purchasing the item

Box beds are designed without a backrest, but usually have screw holes in case you want to put a headboard in the future. Before buying a new headboard, check how far away the brackets are needed to buy a piece that fits snugly on the bed. Check the back of the bed to find out where the screws or their holes are on each side of the furniture and measure the distance between them.

  • Larger beds may have more than one hole in the vertical line, but in this particular case, it is not necessary to take measurements. There should be a horizontal distance from a hole on one side of the bed to another that is on the same level.
  • It is not necessary to do this step if you are going to mount the headboard on the wall.

Step 2. Set the headland width

Measure from one side of the top to the other to find the width. Next, decide whether you want the headboard to support adjacent furniture as equal nightstands. Measure the space between the bed and the far sides of these pieces and add these numbers to the total width.

  • Many headboards extend up to 7.5 cm beyond the corner of the top of the bed.
  • If supporting another type of furniture, use this rule for the far sides of the bed.

Step 3. Define what the height will be

Measure the length of the bed, from top to bottom, and its height, including the mattress or mat. Use these numbers to determine how high the headboard will be above the mattress.

  • A standard headboard is 35 cm taller than the top of the mattress.
  • Very tall headboards should be shorter than the length of the bed.

Method 2 of 4: Attaching Headboard with Brackets

Step 1. Find the bed box screw holes

Check the back of the box bed to find two holes, one on each side of the furniture. Note if it is more common to have holes between three and four inches in the side corner and top of the frame. If they are fabric-covered structures, use your hands to find the location of the holes, as the pattern of the fabric can make these holes difficult to see.

  • Most structures already have screws attached to the furniture, which help to locate the holes.
  • Larger beds can have more than one hole in a vertical line to hold larger, heavier headboards.

Step 2. Attach brackets to frame

Remove the screws that are attached to the frame. Then align the headboard brackets with the screw holes. Insert the screw into the space of each bracket and secure it in the hole. Tighten the screw into the frame, but do not secure it fully enough to immobilize the headboard.

  • Call one or more people to help you hold the headboard. Headboards with supports are quite heavy and can fall off when working.
  • If the bed frame does not have screws, contact the manufacturer to ask what size screw you should buy.

Step 3. Adjust the headboard to the desired height

Place the mattress on the frame to check whether the headboard height is good or not. Raise or lower the headboard along with its frames. Loosen the screws if you think this will make your job easier. When setting the optimal size, use a level to check that both sides are at the same height. Then tighten the screws all the way to secure the headboard in the desired location.

  • In addition to the mattress, also put other materials that can increase your height, such as foam mats or thermal sheets.
  • While the assistants raise and lower the headboard, stand back a little to observe how tall the piece was.

Method 3 of 4: Installing a Floor Headboard

Step 1. Start to assemble the same as you would if it were a headboard with structures

Locate the screw holes on the back of the top of the bed. If you find screws attached, remove them. Otherwise, buy the right size screws for the holes in the bed.

Floor headboards and those with frames are installed in much the same way

Step 2. Position the headboard in the correct location

The structures for a headboard are built within the piece itself. This is the bottom end. Place the headboard vertically behind the top of the frame. Align the frames with the screw holes in the frame. Keep the bottom of the headboard level with the floor.

The main difference between the ground headboards and those with structures is related to the name: the ground headboards are supported on the floor. Do not adjust the height as you would with simple structures

Step 3. Attach the headboard

Fit a screw into the space of each frame and secure it in the hole. Tighten it all the way so that the head is firmly on the frame.

Have a helper hold the headboard so that it is level with the bed frame as you work

Method 4 of 4: Mounting the Headboard on the Wall

Step 1. Measure and mark

The first step is to decide the height of the headboard in relation to the floor. Then measure its height to define where the headboard slat will be installed. Mark the following measurements on the wall with a pencil:

  • The height of the bottom of the headboard from the floor;
  • The height of the top measuring from the ground;
  • One-quarter length from top (to lath).

Step 2. Find and mark brackets

Use a beam finder to find the beams behind the wall in the area where the headboard will be mounted. If it's a single slat, find two consecutive supports that are close to the center of the bed. Mark the location of each on the wall with a pencil at the height of the third measurement (one-quarter the length from the top of the headboard).

  • Always mount the batten on the supports, even if it is not perfectly centered on the bed. A slightly off-center batten fixed to the supports will be stronger than one perfectly centered on the drywall.
  • Headboards for king beds need two slats. In this case, find four consecutive supports near the center of the bed.
  • The standard space between brackets is 40 cm.

Step 3. Install and measure the batten

Secure the batten to the supports. Do some tests to ensure the part is fixed and immobile. Measure from the underside of the batten to where the bottom of the headboard will be installed.

Always test the batten before securing the headboard to ensure it will support the weight of the piece

Step 4. Attach the batten board to the headboard

To find out where to attach the item, read the instruction manual, as the batten and board size may vary depending on the brand or model. Decide how much to add in height based on your previous measurement. Mark the back of the headboard at this new height.

  • The location of the headboard markings should line up with the batten on the wall.
  • The batten plate on the back of the headboard should fit snugly on top of the installed batten.

Step 5. Hang and secure the headboard

Mount the headboard by lifting the plate over the installed batten so that it fits between it and the wall. Then use a beam finder to find two new supports behind the headboard, one on each side, near each end. Support the headboard from the bottom by installing an iron angle on each support. Read the lath instructions to find the ideal iron size.

Also check the suggestions for attaching the spacers under the back of the headboard. The lath can project the headboard from the wall towards the top. The spacers at the bottom will keep the headboard straight. The ideal size may vary by brand or model

Tips

  • Find the screw holes in the bed and measure the distance between them before purchasing a new headboard. Remember that the headboard supports must line up.
  • If the space of the headboard brackets does not match that of the holes, try to secure them to the wall brackets.
