As simple as closing a blind may seem, there are many different models on the market and an inexperienced person may not know what to do. Some blinds have cords, some have only one rod, and others have no apparent control device. Once you've identified your type, follow the techniques below and you'll soon be able to master the art of opening and closing blinds!

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Single Cord Blind

Step 1. Pull the string to the left to unlock the blind

Hold the cord firmly and take it through the window at a 45° angle. You may need to give it a slight downward tug to unlock the cord and blind.

There are several models of blinds that are single cord, such as shutters, mini blinds, pleated and cellular

Step 2. Slowly release the rope to lower the blind

After unlocking the curtain, continue holding the cord to the left. Release it slowly so that the curtain gradually closes.

  • Keep pulling the cord slightly to the left, or the shade will stop rising.
  • Release the cord slowly to prevent it from catching on the locking mechanism.

Step 3. Lower both strands of cord at the same time to keep the shade level

If the curtain is bent, pull only one of the cords to make it level. If the sides are even more uneven, pull the opposite cord to level them.

Step 4. Pull the drawstring to the right to lock the blind's position

Once the curtain is at the desired height, hold the cord firmly so that it stops going down or up. Then pull it to the right of the window to lock the position.

Slowly release the cord to verify that the blind is actually locked in the desired position

Method 2 of 4: Continuous Cord Blind

Step 1. Check if your curtain is actually operated by a continuous cord

This model is usually controlled by an endless circular string. In this case, the blind should be evenly raised or lowered by pulling on one side of the cord.

  • The length of the continuous cord will not change when you open or close the shade.
  • Roman blinds and shutters usually have continuous cords.

Step 2. Pull one side of the cord to lower the shutters

If this action causes the shade to go up, pull the other side down to lower it. Stop pulling once it is in the desired position.

Step 3. Rotate the rod on the opposite side of the window to adjust the shutter blades

If your model has adjustable blades, open or close them by turning the rod that is beside the window, to one side or the other - each model is different, so you need to test to know which side opens or closes your blind.

Not all blinds have adjustable blades

Method 3 of 4: Shade with rod

Step 1. Slide the rod from side to side to move the shutter

Many vertical or paneled louver models are controlled by a rod and rails. If you have such a blind, pull the rod - which is usually at one end of the window - in the direction you want the blind to move.

Some models of vertical or panel shutters are controlled with single or continuous strings

Step 2. Rotate the rod to rotate the shutter blades

Most vertical blinds can be rotated with the rod. Start by turning left; if nothing happens, turn right.

Step 3. If the blind does not move, check the rails

There may be some obstruction in the rails, which are on top of the window or door. It may be necessary to climb a chair or stepladder to reach them and remove the obstruction in question.

Method 4 of 4: Cordless Blind

Step 1. Pull the bottom bar to lower this type of blind

Grasp the bar in the middle and pull it out carefully. When it reaches the desired point, release it to keep it in position.

On some models, you have to press a button or attach a lock to prevent the blind from rising again

Step 2. Rotate the lower bar to rotate the shutter blades

If the blind does not have a rod to adjust the opening and closing of the blades, try using the lower bar. Be aware, however, that some of these models do not open or close the blades.

Step 3. Use the remote control if the blind is motorized

The specific controls for motorized shutters vary by manufacturer and model, but you can usually lower them by pressing the down arrow or "Close" button. When in doubt, consult your device manual.

  • Try changing the controller's batteries if it's not responding to your commands.
  • If you have a blind connected to an app or smart home type device, use your mobile phone to control the blind.
