Despite its name, the voodoo doll is not historically linked to the religious practice known as voodoo, actually going back to European shamans. You can use it to cast positive and negative spells, or simply as a slightly macabre decor piece. While it's pretty easy to buy a ready-made doll, creating it from scratch is much better: not just because it's cheaper, but because you'll be able to give the doll the look you want.

Method 1 of 2: Making a Felt Voodoo Doll

Make a Voodoo Doll Step 1

Step 1. Create the pattern on a sheet of paper and cut it out

Look for a person-shaped pattern on the internet or design one yourself. Remember that the design does not have to be realistic or proportional. What's more, it can be as big or small as you like. However, most voodoo dolls fit in one hand.

Anyone who can't draw can use a man-shaped cookie cutter as a stencil, as long as they remember to make a bigger, rounder head

Step 2. Attach the mold to two pieces of felt with pins

They should be close to the center of the mold - as near the edges they would get in the way of cutting the fabric. If the mold is very small, you can nail it to a single piece of felt folded in half.

The felt color can be whatever you want, from flesh to green, red or even blue

Step 3. Using the template as a guide, cut the felt and remove the pins

Thanks to the way the doll is assembled, there is no need to leave gaps for the seams. Once the two pieces are cut, remove the pins. Set the mold aside; it will no longer be needed.

Step 4. Sew a button to one of the pieces for the right eye

Choose which of the pieces will be the front part of the doll and, for now, leave its counterpart aside. Thread a thread of black thread on a needle, and use it to sew a white button on the right portion of the head. Finish sewing on the back of the felt, but don't cut the thread yet.

To create a slightly more elaborate puppet, cut a circle of black felt slightly larger than the button. Place it between this and the felt patch before sewing

Step 5. Sew an X in place of the left eye

Without taking the needle thread, sew an X stitch on the left portion of the head, which will represent the left eye. It can be of a similar size to the opposite eye or a little bigger or smaller than it. Finish the X on the back of the patch. Don't cut the thread yet.

Another possibility is to sew a second button to make the left eye. It can be the same or different from the other button

Step 6. Sew a horizontal line for the base of the mouth

The mouth should have a width equal to the space between the centers of the two eyes and be at the base of the head. Pass the needle from the back to the front of the felt so that the mouth starts just below the left eye. Align the needle with the right eye and cross it to the back of the felt again. Don't cut the thread yet.

Loosen the thread so as not to wrinkle the felt

Step 7. Create four or five vertical lines distributed across the mouth so that it looks sewn

Working from left to right, sew seams perpendicular to the mouth and positioned between the ends of the mouth that are evenly distributed. When finished, you can tie a knot and cut the thread.

Step 8. Sew a red felt heart to the left side of the doll

To start, cut out a little red felt heart. Place it on the doll's left chest, where a real person's heart would be. After tying the needle with black thread and knotting the ends, begin sewing the heart from the back of the felt patch. Finish sewing on the back of the felt, tie a knot in the thread and cut it.

  • Stitch straight seams to get the best finish. Go over and under the heart, as close to the edge as possible.
  • Stitch parallel seams for a rustic finish. Thread the needle from bottom to top through the heart, then top to bottom on the felt near the edge, and so on.

Step 9. Sew the two pieces of felt with the backs facing each other

Put more black thread on the needle and knot the ends. Starting at the armpit, insert the needle from the back to the front of the doll. Thread the outside edge and insert the needle into the back of the doll again, just above the first stitch. Go around the doll, stopping only at the left hip, leaving a crack between it and the armpit. Don't cut the thread for now.

  • For a better finish, sew in buttonhole stitch.
  • As it will not be possible to turn the doll inside out, it is necessary to remember to sew with the back of the pieces facing inwards.

Step 10. Upholster the doll

You can make it with polyester fiber, available at fabric or craft stores, or with cotton balls, which have to be broken up to make the doll look fluffy.

  • Use the dry end of a pencil or pen to upholster the doll's arms and legs.
  • To build an authentic voodoo doll, upholster it with a velvet beard.

Step 11. Finish sewing

Once the doll is upholstered to its satisfaction, finish sewing it with the same technique as before. When you reach the left armpit, tie a knot in the line and cut it. Your doll is finished!

Method 2 of 2: Making a Woolen Voodoo Doll

Make a Voodoo Doll Step 12

Step 1. Fold a pipe cleaner in half and open it to form the neck

Use a 30 cm cleaner. Hold the point 2.5 cm above the center fold, separating the two halves of the pipe cleaner from it so that they form a 90° angle with the neck.

Make a Voodoo Doll Step 13

Step 2. Fold each segment to create 4 cm arms

On the doll's left arm, measure 4 cm from the neck. Fold down the portion between this point and the end of the pipe cleaner. Repeat on the other arm.

Once this is done, the doll will have a neck of 2.5 cm, which will be vertical, and two horizontal portions of 4 cm that are equivalent to the arms. The rest of the pipe cleaner will be pointing down

Make a Voodoo Doll Step 14

Step 3. Make the leg joint 5 cm below the arms

Fold in both ends of the pipe cleaner. Once this is done, fold both ends down, starting at the point where they meet just below the neck. Finally, make a fold 4 cm from each end of the pipe cleaner to form the legs. Your doll should have:

  • A neck of 2.5 cm;
  • Arms, both horizontal, 4 cm;
  • The trunk, perpendicular to the arms, with 5 cm;
  • And the 4 cm legs, both diagonally.

Step 4. Put a small wooden bead around his neck

Choose a wooden bead and 2.5 cm long, spread some glue inside the hole of the bead and insert it into the pipe cleaner part equivalent to the neck.

  • You can use a 2.5 cm foam ball instead of the beads. Drill it, fill it with glue and insert the doll's neck into it.
  • You can use a bead a little bigger, but remember: it will look even bigger after it's wrapped in the wool.
Make a Voodoo Doll Step 16

Step 5. Wrap wool around the bead until it is completely covered

Glue the end of the wool to the bead. Roll the wool vertically, horizontally and diagonally until it completely covers the beads. Always change direction. When finished, glue the other end of the wool.

  • If the head looks too small, continue rolling the wool. The more you do it, the bigger it gets.
  • The wool can be any color you like. Keep in mind that the final color of the doll will be given later when you wrap it with sewing thread.
Make a Voodoo Doll Step 17

Step 6. Wrap wool around the doll's legs and torso

Starting from the hip, wrap the wool up to the tip of the left leg, then up to the hip again. In the same way, curl your right leg to the tip and back to the hip. Roll the dummy up its torso until it reaches the arms. When finished rolling them, roll the trunk a few more times to make it thicker.

  • To better cover the doll, you can run the wool between the loops of pipe cleaner on the doll's arms and legs, and wrap them from there.
  • If you are going to use uncoated copper wire, you will have to wrap it several times around the doll; otherwise, the pipe cleaner will not be completely covered.
Make a Voodoo Doll Step 18

Step 7. Make the colors and clothes with sewing thread

You can leave the doll as it is, or wrap colored sewing thread around it, which would give it a prettier thickness, contour, and color. Wrap it the same way you did the wool. If you like, you can use different colors around the head and body - you can even intersperse the colors to create a design of a shirt and pants.

Give a nicer outline by winding the line a few times between left shoulder and right armpit, then between right shoulder and left armpit. Thus, an X-shaped volume will be created on the doll

Make a Voodoo Doll Step 19

Step 8. Finish the details with beads, buttons or more sewing thread

With beads and buttons, you can make the eyes, and with black line, the mouth. Other details, such as the beard and belt, can be made of felt. To give the doll hair, provide a bundle of equal-sized line segments, tie it in the middle, and glue it to the top of the doll's head.

  • If you know a person with a slightly macabre sense of humor, this would be a good gift for her - even more so if she has recently experienced the end of a relationship!
  • Felt dolls can be used as pillows for needles.
  • Tie a string to the top of the doll's head to use as a keyring or decoration piece.
  • It is possible to glue a magnet to the doll's back and place it on some iron surface.
  • If you attach a pin to the doll's back with hot glue, you can use it as a brooch.
  • Voodoo dolls don't have to be used for evil. It is also possible to use it to bring good, happiness, health and luck to other people.

  • Voodoo dolls manufactured by the above methods may not be effective.
  • Be careful when using the puppet for evil - any negativity you cause someone else can come back to you.
