Being elegant is usually associated with wealth or socioeconomic class, but in fact, anyone can have that quality. For that, you just need to create your own definition of elegance, style and sociability. Along with these aspects of elegance, you also need to be confident and recognize your own importance. If you believe you are someone elegant, others will think the same about you.
Method 1 of 3: Acting with elegance
Step 1. Have good manners
Elegant people have good manners and know the limits in human relationships. Always say "please" and "thank you" when the situation calls for it. Speak "excuse me", greet people courteously and have good table etiquette - like always chewing with your mouth closed.
Also, avoid using your cell phone at the table or when talking to someone
Step 2. Avoid arrogance
Although elegant people can be, in many cases, rich or "upper class", that does not mean that they are arrogant. It's important to have confidence in yourself and your abilities, but don't think because of that that you are better than others. Treating everyone as equal is an elegant attitude.
Step 3. Take responsibility for your actions and obligations
Fulfill your commitments and always do your best. For example, if you want to throw a party for someone, prepare it with all your effort. Or, if you spill something while you're at someone else's house, don't forget to clean it up.
Step 4. Be articulate
Elegant people have a wide vocabulary and know when to use it. However, they never force words into sentences incoherently. Read and study to expand your vocabulary, but don't use your knowledge to show off. Speak clearly and confidently.
Step 5. Look for stylish people you admire
It could be a friend, a historical personality or even a celebrity. Avoid copying them entirely, just letting your way of being, your style, and your attitudes influence you. That way, you'll build a strong foundation for becoming someone stylish on your own.
Some examples of elegant people in the movie world are Emma Watson, Kate Middleton, Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne
Step 6. Practice speaking.
For greater elegance, pronounce vowels and consonants in an elaborate manner, without straining the syllables or exaggerating the inflections. Do theater exercises if you want to practice expressiveness in your voice, or singing exercises to practice vocal projection.
- Avoid neglecting the endings of words or speaking in a rush.
- Observe the pronunciation of elegant people and try to emulate them to develop your oratory.
Method 2 of 3: Acting Elegantly
Step 1. Make an effort to communicate with others
Set aside time each day to talk to someone. It can be with a friend or even the postman. Show genuine interest in what is being said and, even more importantly, speak only what comes in a meek and natural way.
Step 2. Attend the parties you are invited to
It's okay not to be naturally outgoing, but make the effort to attend meetings if an invitation has been made. Thank the host and bring him a small gift, such as a bottle of wine. At the party, talk to as many people as possible and try to really enjoy the moment.
As a gift, you could also bring flowers or an appetizer - like a cheese platter
Step 3. Develop a sociable hobby
Look for something that involves spending time with other people and that is enjoyable. It could be football, a reading club or painting classes. Preferably invest time and energy in a hobby that involves improving yourself, either in mind or body.
Step 4. Learn as much as possible
Stay up to date with current events and read books during your free time. If you are still studying, do your best to get good grades and benefit from your education. Even if you are well educated, it is important to never miss the opportunity to learn from someone more experienced or intelligent.
- Read newspapers, whether printed or on the internet, such as Estadão or Folha de São Paulo.
- Watch the news, regardless of the channel you prefer.
- Read literary classics such as "Jane Eyre" by Emily Brontë.
Step 5. Send thank you letters
Although not very common these days, these cards are always a highly valued sign of education. Send a thank-you note whenever someone does something nice for you, invites you to a party, or gives you a gift. If you can't deliver something handwritten, send an email or a message.
Method 3 of 3: Looking Elegant
Step 1. Have good hygiene
Brush your teeth at least twice a day and shower daily. Washing your hair every day is not ideal for everyone, so wash and condition as often as is appropriate for your hair type. It is important to clean your nails and keep them trimmed. Ideally, always be clean and in good health.
Step 2. Exercise regularly
Stay healthy by exercising at least three times a week. If possible, exercise five times a week for at least 30 minutes a day. Find something you like, whether it's running, swimming or even dancing. Exercising regularly increases both your energy and self-confidence.
Step 3. Invest in your personal style
You don't have to adhere to a specific style to be elegant. Define the one that makes you more confident and invest in it, looking for clothes and accessories that complement it. The style can be preppy, retro or even hipster.
Step 4. Choose clothes suitable for your body type and made from classic fabrics
Wear clothes that aren't too tight or baggy, but fit your shape perfectly. The fit and overall look will be even better if you prefer classic fabrics - such as cotton, wool, linen and silk. They may be a little more expensive, but it's better to buy a few quality clothes than many otherwise.
Step 5. Use solid neutral colors
If it seems difficult to find a style that suits you, a good option is to go for simple clothes in neutral colors. Some excellent neutral colors to choose from are white, navy, black and grey. For example, you could wear dark blue pants together with a white blouse.
Step 6. Use simple accessories
You can, of course, wear whatever accessories you like, but it's very elegant to just pick a few more basic ones. For example, wear a simple silver necklace with small silver earrings. Or, wear a brown leather belt with moccasins of the same color. Let your confidence shine through instead of waiting for the clothes to speak for you.
