Read this article to learn how to brew potions in Minecraft. They can increase strength, restore health or even damage enemies, depending on the ingredients used.
Steps
Part 1 of 5: Collecting Supplies
Step 1. Travel to the Nether
A lot of ingredients can only be collected from the Nether, so you'll need to go there to start the potion-making process.
The Nether is a very dangerous place, especially for new players. Maybe it's better to set the difficulty to “Pacific” so you don't die on the spot
Step 2. Gather ingredients in the Nether
Two things will be collected while on the Nether:
- Nether Fungus: Mushroom-like item found on the floor of Nether strongholds;
- Incandescent Wands: The blazes make the sticks glow when they are defeated. However, it may be necessary to increase the difficulty to “Easy” for these enemies to appear.
Step 3. Return to the normal world
Exit the Nether by going through the portal you opened.
Step 4. Create the Potions Stand and place it on the floor
Open the crafting bench, place three cobblestones on the bottom row of the grid, a glowing stick in the middle square, and move the Potions Holder into the inventory. There, select it and click on the ground to place the equipment.
- In Minecraft PE, just tap on the Potions Holder icon and tap “1x” to create it;
- On console versions, select Potions Support and press "A" (Xbox) or "X" (PlayStation).
Step 5. Create glass bottles
Open the workbench, place a glass block on the left and right, in the second row and in the middle of the last row. Move the three glass stack to inventory.
- In Minecraft PE, just tap on the glass bottle icon and choose “3x”;
- Press "A" or "X" on console Minecrafts.
Step 6. Create blaze powder
Open the workbench and place a glow stick on any square. Transfer the powder, in the result, to the inventory.
- In Minecraft PE, tap on the blaze powder icon and select “2x”;
- On console versions, select the item's icon and press "A" or "X".
Step 7. Find the secondary ingredients
Base potions have no effect, and need another ingredient added to achieve some purpose. Effects vary depending on the ingredients chosen.
- Spider's Eye: Left by spiders, cave spiders and witches. Can be used to make poisonous potions;
- Glittering Watermelon: Place a watermelon in the center of the crafting grid and surround it with Gold Nuggets. Create potions that restore health instantly;
- Golden Carrot: Create this by surrounding a carrot with eight Gold Nuggets. Used for night vision potions;
- Blaze Powder: Use a glow stick (left by the blazes) to get two blaze powders. The ingredient is used in potions to increase strength;
- Fermented Spider's Eye: Create this by placing a spider's eye, mushroom, and sugar on the craft grid. It is used in creating potions that inflict weakness;
- Puffer fish: fishable. It is used in the creation of underwater breathing potions;
- Magma Cream: When defeated, the magma cubes leave this item, which can also be created by combining blaze powder and slime goo. Used for fire resistance potions.
- Sugar: created from a single block of sugar cane. Used in creating speed potions;
- Ghast's Tear: left by the ghasts. Hard to get as these enemies like to float on lava. Used in creating regeneration potions;
- Rabbit's Foot: Defeat rabbits to get them (the chance that they will drop this item is 2.5%). Add it to the creation of jump or superjump potions.
Step 8. Get potion modifiers
To further alter their effects, you can add a new ingredient after its creation; they usually increase the amount of time the potion remains active. They can also be thrown so that they break on impact.
- Redstone: Created from redstone ore, resulting in four or five blocks. Makes potions take longer;
- Glowstone Powder: Item obtained by breaking a glowstone block (one to four pieces). When added to potions, it makes them stronger but of shorter duration;
- Gunpowder: Obtained by defeating creepers, witches and ghasts. Potions become throwable.
- Fermented Spider's Eye: A minor ingredient that can also be used to modify potions. Usually reverses or corrupts effects.
Step 9. Fill the glass bottles
Find a water source, equip the bottles and select the water to fill them. Once you have a stack of three glass bottles, you are ready to make them.
Part 2 of 5: Creating the potions
Step 1. Open the Potions Holder by selecting it while facing it
Step 2. Place the bottles with water in the holder
Click and drag them to the three spaces at the bottom of the page.
- In Minecraft PE, tap a space and then the bottle icon on the left side of the page;
- On console versions, press “Y” (Xbox) or the triangle (Playstation) with the water bottle selected.
Step 3. Add a Nether Fungus in the upper space of the fabrication grid
Step 4. Incorporate Blaze Powder by dragging it to the square in the upper left corner of the Potion Creation window
This will cause the “base potion” – known as “Awkward Potion” or “Strange Potion” – to be brewed.
- Skip this Step in Minecraft PE;
- Press "Y" or triangle with blaze powder selected, on console versions.
Step 5. Return the Strange Potions to Potions Support
Now that you have the “base” potion, it's time to add a second ingredient to modify it.
Step 6. To do this, place the secondary ingredient (rabbit foot, for example) in the space at the top of the Potions Holder
Again, she will be prepared.
The blaze powder should serve for 20 preparation cycles
Step 7. Put the potion in your inventory; it will be ready to be consumed
Part 3 of 5: Creating potions with positive effects
