Gengar is one of several Pokémon that cannot normally be found within the game and can only be obtained through trade-in evolution: you must capture a Haunter, trade it with another player and then it will immediately evolve into Gengar. It's important to know how to trade not just to get your Gengar, but to get the most out of the game.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Capture Gastly or Haunter

Gengar is the evolved form of Haunter and cannot be found around the world. To get a Gengar, you'll need to capture a Haunter (or a Gastly and train it until it evolves into a Haunter) and then trade it with another player for the evolution to happen.

Step 1. Defeat Team Rocket in Celadon

You must defeat the gym leader of that city, Erika, and have obtained your fourth badge for this event to happen in the game. After defeating Giovanni and the other members of Team Rocket, you will receive the Silph Scope item; it allows you to see the ghost Pokémon that inhabit the Pokémon Tower of Lavender City.

Step 2. Enter the Pokemon Tower

Now that you have the Silph Scope item, you won't have to run away from ghost Pokémon anymore.

Step 3. Go up to the second floor and look for Gary

Once inside the Pokemon Tower, go through the balcony and use the stairs to go up to the second floor.

Step 4. Defeat Gary

Once you reach the second floor, look for Gary (he will be in the north part of this room) and talk to him; a battle will break out and you must defeat him. The team of Pokémon Gary will use in this fight depends on the Pokémon you've chosen as your starter. These are Gary's possible teams:

  • If you have chosen Charmander as your starter: Pidgeotto (level 25), Kadabra (level 20), Exeggcute (level 22), Wartortle (level 25) and Growlithe (level 23).
  • If you have chosen Bulbasaur as your starter: Pidgeotto (level 25), Kadabra (level 20), Exeggcute (level 23), Gyarados (level 22) and Charmeleon (level 25)
  • If you have chosen Squirtle as your starter: Pidgeotto (level 25), Kadabra (level 20), Ivysaur (level 25), Gyarados (level 23) and Growlithe (level 22).

Step 5. Go up to the third floor

After defeating Gary, head west and use the stairs to reach the third floor.

Step 6. Start looking for your Haunter

The third floor of the Pokémon Tower is the first where you can face and capture wild Pokémon. The chances of finding a Haunter change from floor to floor (ranging from 1 to 15%), with higher floors offering a greater chance. You may have more luck finding and capturing a Gastly, but it will take a little longer to get your Gengar.

  • Another way you can get a Haunter is to capture a Gastly and train it up to level 25 to evolve. As they are Ghost-type Pokémon, Gastly and Haunter are immune to Normal and Fighting-type moves; in addition, because they have the ability Levitate (Levitation) they are also immune to Ground type moves.
  • If you capture a Gastly, you'll need to evolve it before making the switch.

Step 7. Capture Gastly or Haunter

Decrease your opponent's hit points as much as possible and then start throwing your Pokeballs. It won't be difficult to catch a Gastly, but you might need to spend some Poke Balls before you can catch a Haunter.

Part 2 of 2: Evolve your Haunter

Step 1. Prepare to make the switch

After capturing a Haunter (or a Gastly and evolving it into a Haunter), head to the nearest Pokémon Center and use the stairs to reach the second floor.

If this is your first time going up to this floor, there will be an NPC who will give you a quick explanation of what you can do at each of the balconies

Step 2. Start the exchange process

Talk to the NPC at the third counter and choose the "Trade Center" option (you will need to save your progress). Remember that you need another person (or another console) to make the switch, either over the GBA link cable or over the wireless connection. If using link cable, make sure the consoles are properly connected before starting the exchange.

Step 3. Select the player to trade

Select the option "Join Group" or "Become Leader" and then confirm by selecting "OK". You will then be taken to a room where you will meet the other player.

The second player must choose the opposite option; for example, if you chose "Become Leader", the other player should select the option "Join Group"

Step 4. Start the exchange

Sit in the chair in the center of the room and press "A" to initiate the exchange.

Step 5. Select your Haunter and confirm the exchange with your friend (or another GBA console)

Once the trade ends, your Haunter will immediately evolve to Gengar. Then repeat this process to get your Gengar back from your friend (or your other GBA console).
